Alexander Harvey Carson

(1652-1736)

In 1607, about the same time England began colonizing Jamestown, England also began colonizing an area of northern Ireland called Ulster in an attempt to take control of Ireland away from Catholic noblemen. Various English and Scottish Protestant noblemen undertook to develop Ulster. Over the next hundred years, the "undertakers", as they were called, recruited Protestant laborers, craftsmen, and tenant farmers from England and Scotland to settle in Ulster. But instead of granting the land to the settlers, the undertakers rented the land to them. There was much hardship and many hard feelings between the Catholics and the Protestants and between the noblemen and the tenants.

Alexander Harvey Carson was born about 1652 in Ulster, North Ireland. He was a Presbyterian minister. It is believed that his parents or grandparents immigrated to North Ireland from Scotland in the early part of the century. To date no proof has been found of his parentage. Alexander married Margaret Jane McClinton 1675 in Ulster, North Ireland, daughter of William McClinton and Janet McDuff. Margaret Jane had an earlier marriage to Robert Andrew Wilson born about 1650. Margaret Jane died after 1717 in Down County, Ulster, North Ireland. Alexander died 1718 in Down County, Ulster, North Ireland.

Children of Alexander Carson and Margaret McClinton were:

  1. Robert Carson, born about 1676 in Ulster, North Ireland.
  2. Thomas Carson, born about 1678 in Ulster, North Ireland.

3. John Carson

John Carson

(1680-1777)

Colonization of America was working better than colonization of Ireland. Many of the colonists in Ireland decided to move on to America. Between 1717 and the Revolution, over 250,000 Protestant Irish arrived in the Colonies. Over three-fourths were Scots-Irish Presbyterians from Ulster. These Protestant immigrants from Ireland, with Scottish roots, became known in America as the Scots-Irish.

Most arrived at the port of Philadelphia, but only a few made it their home. Most of the King's lands there had already been distributed. The land that was available to them was to the west on the borders of or actually in Indian Territory. Having lived in the turmoil and strife of Ulster, North Ireland, the Scots-Irish weren't intimidated by the idea of pioneering in Indian Territory. For fifty years, they surged westward.

By the time of the Revolution there were 600,000 Scots-Irish in America They were known for their hatred of the British and their rugged individualism. Many fought bravely in the American Revolution.

John Carson was born about 1680 in Ulster, North Ireland. He married Sarah Dickey 1705 in Ulster, North Ireland. She was the daughter of Moses Dickey and Mary Witherspoon, and was born about 1682 in Ulster, North Ireland. No record of John and Sarah's immigration has been found, but judging by family birth and marriage dates, it must have been between 1720 and 1726. In 1733 John was working as an Indian trader on the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. An 18th century map shows "Carson's" just north of present-day Harrisburg.

"Carson's" enlarged for legibility

The children of John Carson and Sarah Dickey were:

  1. Andrew Carson, born 1706 in Ulster, North Ireland.
  2. John Carson, born about 1708 in Ulster, North Ireland;
died June 28, 1756 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

3. Moses Carson

  1. Samuel Carson, born 1712 in Ulster, North Ireland;
died 1762 in York County, Pennsylvania.
  2. William Carson, born 1714 in Ulster, North Ireland; died 1776 in Iredell County, North Carolina. He married Eleanor Jane McDuff 1753 in York County, Pennsylvania. He died in Scruggs Plantation, Rowan County, North Carolina and was buried at Morrison's Graveyard, Iredell County, North Carolina. He was the grandfather of the famous Christopher "Kit" Carson.
  3. Rachel Carson was born 1719 in Ulster, North Ireland. She died September 22, 1798 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

Carson's is gone, but Carsonville is in the upper right. 9

Kit Carson

(1809-1868)

Kit Carson was born December 24,1809 in Madison County, Kentucky. He ran away from home at an early age and became a famous trapper, scout, Indian agent, soldier and authentic legend of the West. He was enshrined in popular mythology even in his own lifetime and has been the subject of many books, movies and comic books.

Moses Carson

(1710-1790+)

Moses Carson was born about 1710 in Tyrone County, Ulster, North Ireland. He married Sarah Hickman about 1726. She was born in Pennsylvania. Sometime after 1726 Moses and Sarah set off down "The Great Wagon Road." By 1736 the family was in Brunswick County, Virginia.

The children of Moses Carson and Sarah Hickman were:

1. John Carson was born about 1727. He married Ann Dixon about 1742. She was born in Brunswick County, Virginia. John died 1762 in a part of Indian Territory that's now in Sumner County,Tennessee. Most of his descendants moved to Butler County, Kentucky.

2. James S. Carson

3. Elizabeth Carson was born about 1745 in Brunswick County, Virginia. On December 2, 1763, she married James Patterson in Bedford County, Virgina. He was born about 1740 in Virginia.

The Great Wagon Road

In 1722 the first treaty was ratified between the Native Americans and the Colonies of New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The "Great Treaty of 1722" gave colonists free passage down the "Great Warrior Path" from Pennsylvania to Virginia. This opened up the piedmont of Virginia to settlement by recent immigrants to the port of Philadelphia. The "Great Warrior Path" soon came to be called the "Great Philadelphia Wagon Road." It started at Philadelphia, passed through Lancaster, and proceeded down the Shenandoah Valley. It was the most heavily traveled "road" in colonial America. Conestoga wagons were invented in the Conestoga Valley near Lancaster, Pennsylvania to sell to these westward pioneers. Today the "Great Wagon Road" is Interstate 81.

The Chick House

Built 1790

Moses Carson was the original owner of the Chick House built about 1790. Moses was about eighty years old when the house was built. It's located 5.1 miles west of Appomattox, Virginia on Route 460. In 1790 the house was in Campbell County (created in 1782). Appomattox County didn't exist until 1845.

The owners of record of the Chick House were: Moses Carson, John Shearer, and J.E. Chick. It was a rectangular, two-story frame home with four rooms 16 by 16 in the main part of the house. The old quilting hooks are still in the ceiling, and the mantels are carved and high over the fireplaces. The stairway handrail is turned, and the balusters and the newels are square. The two rooms in the cellar each have fireplaces. In early days the house was used by stage coaches to deposit mail, and to supply food and water for the passengers and horses.

Bondurant Family History

Annie Virginia Lavinia Bondurant's immigrant ancestor was an apothecary named Jean Pierre Bondurant born July 18, 1677 in Genolhac, Gard, Languedoc, France. After immigrating, he married Ann L'Orange. Jean Pierre died January 21, 1734 in Manakin Town, Virginia. Many descendants have accumulated wonderful information about Jean Pierre's ancestors in France. If you search Bondurant online you'll find much more information than given here.

Around 1700 French Protestants were actually being slaughtered by French Catholics. The Protestants, then called Huguenots, fled for their lives. Jean Pierre was among thousands who poured into England. These refugees were transported by the King of England to the colonies. Jean Pierre arrived in Jamestown September 20, 1700 on the ship "Ye Peter and Anthony" which sailed from London.

Ye Peter & Anthony

In 1704 the King of England granted to the Huguenots 10,000 acres on the site of an abandoned Monocan Indian village. The Huguenots named their new town "Manakin Town". It was in Henrico County at that time, but is in Powhatan County now. An amazing amount of documentation about the Huguenots and Manakin Town has survived and is available online. On birth, death, passenger, and naturalization records you'll find many familiar names -among them: Easley, LeGrand, Perrow (Perrault), Michie, Seay, Moseley, Rucker, Sallee, Hughes, Agee, and Garrett.

From his eulogy:

"Perhaps the greatest tribute that can be said of Kit is that wherever he went he was amongst friends. This I feel, through my acquaintance with him, is due in large part to the zest with which Kit opened himself to others. As I look back on the times that I enjoyed with Kit, I remember his conviviality, his vitality, his readiness to meet you on terms of your own choosing. He was never offensive about his friendship. There was a warmth about him that worked to set you at ease. It seems to me that Kit went out of his way to pay compliments to others. I suppose that one thinks of Southern hospitality when he thinks of Kit Carson."

Notes for Alma Burton Carson:
The following is from "The Family of Aurelius Burton Carson, Sr":

"As the depression years began it became necessary for Alma to leave school and find work as a beautician for Mrs. T.C. McDow in Lynchburg to earn extra money for the family. She was extremely bright and always regretted not being able to continue her education. She was the 'rock' for the other brothers and sisters, always there to lend a hand, plan a picnic or reunion and care for A.B. and Alice during their declining years. As an example, Elsie tells the story of Alma spending her own money to buy her dress and fix her hair for her high school graduation and how special that made her feel.

"Alma met Lyle N. Garrett, Sr and they married on May 13, 1939 and the rest is history. They raised two boys and two girls and became wonderful role models for their children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, Lyle died in 1999 of prostate cancer. Alma spent her last years suffering from the debilitating effects of Alzheimers disease, but on some level seemed still to light up when her children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren would visit and was most responsive to music."
