Stanier Memorial in Cropredy Church
Francis Stanier [1657-1725] and his Widow Mary [1653 - 1726]
Liz Newman has sent me this email
I recently visited Cropredy Church, Oxfordshire, and transcribed the
memorial to Francis Stanier and his widow.
"HERE LIETH THE BODY
OF THE REVd Mr FRANCIS
STANIER VICAR OF THIS
PARISH FOR THE TERM
OF 41 YEARS WHO DEPAR
TED THIS LIFE MAR qtrCH 25
IN THE 76th YEAR OF HIS
AGE ANNOQ DNI 1725
Here alfo is Interrd Mary ye
wife of the Revd Mr Francis
Stanier daughter of William
Taylor of Williamcot Gent
and Iemima his wife who de
parted this life May the 11
in the 73rd year of her age
Annoq Dni 1726"
Francis died March 25th - a tricky date! I checked the Cropredy P.R.
and found his burial on March 28th 1726. So his widow followed him to
the grave some six weeks (rather than fourteen months) later.
The memorial is a flat ledger in local stone with no decoration. The
inscription is very clear. The memorial lies within the chancel,
immediately inside the communion rail on the south side. It owes its
special position quite as much to the local importance of the Taylor
family of Williamscot (note current spelling) as to deference to
Francis as vicar.
I found two sons of this marriage in Cropredy P.R. - Francis baptised
16 Oct. 1691 and John baptised 17 Oct. 1695.
Best wishes
Liz Newman
