
Stanley Francis Tomkovick
Stanley Francis Tomkovick, 86, died at The Pavilion of Waukegan on February 14, 2003. He was born in
Waukegan on October 8, 1916.
He graduated from Holy Rosary Grade School, 1930; Waukegan Township High School, 1934; Northern
Illinois University, B.E., Major in Social Studies, Minor in English, 1940; postgraduate extension program,
Cambridge, England, 1947-48, M.A. in Guidance and Administration, 1951, and post graduate studies,
1955-65, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.
He was a Social Studies and General Math teacher, Woodstock, IL, Junior High School, 1940-1; English
teacher, Counselor, Golf Coach, Waukegan Township High School, 1944-54; English teacher, 1954-6,
Counselor, 1954-69, Guidance Director, 1956-69; Assistant Principal, Guidance and Curriculum, 1956-71,
Principal, 1971-5, North Chicago Community High School; Exchange teacher, Colsterworth School,
Colsterworth near Granthan, Lincolnshire, England, 1947-8.
He was a Pilot in the 375th Bomb Squadron, 308th Bomb Group, 14th Air Force Flying Tigers, from
1941-4, stationed in Cheng King, near Kunming, China. He served under General Claire L. Chennault, and
was decorated with the U. S. Air Medal and the Chinese War Air Medal.
He was a member of the National and Illinois Education Association, National and Illinois Association of
Secondary School Principles, American and Illinois Personnel and Guidance Association, National Vocational
Guidance Association, American School Counselors, Association of Counselor Education Supervision,
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National and Illinois Association for Educatonal
Data Systems, North Suburban School Principals Association, President, 1974-5, and North Central
Association Review Committee.
He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, 14th Air Force Association Flying Tigers, North
Chicago American Legion, Chairman, Illinois Boys State, 1952-75; Phi Delta Kappa, Benevolent Protection
Order of Elks, North Chicago Little League, President, 1964-6; City Club of Waukegan, Holy Family
Church, School Board Member, 1969-71; Lake County Retired Teachers Association, Scholarship
Chairperson; and St. Dismas Church.
He joined the North Chicago Club of Rotary International in 1968. He was President, 1970-1, was the
original Youth Exchange Chairman, 1976-7; member of the District Youth Exchange Committee, 1977-83;
District Youth Exchange Outbound Coordinator, 1980-1, and founder of District #6440 ROTEX for
returning youth exchange students, 1981. He served as member of the District Nominating Committee, and
Governor's Representative, 1971-2. He was a Paul Harris Fellow.
He was a member of the founding committee for the North Chicago Community High School District
#123 in 1952-3, and Charter Board Member and first President of Partners in Progress With North Chicago
School District 187 Foundation in 1990.
He played varsity golf for Northern Illinois University, was the golf coach at Waukegan Township High
School for ten years and had teams that placed seventh and second in State Tournaments; he instructed golf
for seven years at the North Chicago Community High School Evening School after he retired.
He was listed in the 1976-7 edition of WHO'S WHO IN THE MIDWEST, and contributed materials for a
chapter to GUIDANCE; PRINCIPLES AND SERVICES by Frank W. Miller.
He is survived by his wife, Joan (Johnston) of Waukegan; three children, John (Nancy) of Chapel Hill, NC,
Charles of Eau Clare, WI and Julianne of Chapel Hill, NC; a granddaughter, Jessica of Durham, NC; a foster
daughter, Joanne (John) Zimmerman of Minneapolis, MN; three foster granddaughters, Anne (Mark) Overby
of Minneapolis and Dara (Jim) Schulenberg of Mesa, AZ, and Ria (Andrew) Sharon, Chesterfield, MO; a
foster great grandson, Max Overby; and two foster great granddaughters, Madeline Schulenberg and Mason
Sharon; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Julia (Stachowicz) Tomkowicz; his first wife, Wanda
(Ryskiewicz; two brothers, Frank (Helen) Tomkowicz and Edward (Marion) Tomkovich; five sisters,
Angeline (Joseph) Kocal, Mary (Tony) Kocal, Sophie (Bruno) Kaires, Anne (Sister Mary Conceptia, Felician
Order) and Helen (Tony) Jaronik; and a foster son, Norman Swanson.
A Memorial Mass will be held on March 1, 2003 at 11 AM at St. Dismas Church, 2600 Sunset Avenue,
Waukegan with con-celebrants, the Rev. John M. Ryan, Pastor, and the Rev. Paul J. Cull, Pastor Emeritus,
officiating. Interment at Ascension Cemetery will be private.
Visitation will be from 9 AM until time of Mass at 11 AM on Saturday at St. Dismas Church.

2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of
3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Stanley
4 Francis Tomkovick on February 14, 2003; and
5 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick was born in Waukegan on October 8,
6 1916 to Stanley and Julia (Stachowicz) Tomkowicz; he
7 graduated Waukegan Township High School in 1934; and
8 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick attended Northern Illinois
9 University and received a B.E. with a major in social studies
10 and a minor in English; he played varsity golf at Northern
11 Illinois University; he was in the post graduate extension

16 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick valiantly served his country as a

18 Force Flying Tigers from 1941 until 1944; he was stationed in
19 Cheng King which is near Kunming, China; he served under
20 General Claire L. Chennault and was decorated with the U.S.
21 Air Medal and the Chinese War Air Medal; and
22 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick taught at Woodstock Junior High
23 School, Waukegan Township High School, and North Chicago
24 Community High School; he taught social studies, English, and
25 general math, and was an exchange teacher at Colsterworth
26 School in Colsterworth near Granthan, Lincolnshire, England;
27 he worked as guidance counselor; golf coach; guidance
28 director; assistant principal, guidance and curriculum; and
29 principal; and
30 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick was the golf coach at Waukegan
31 Township High School for ten years and had teams that placed

1 seventh and second in State tournaments; he instructed golf
2 for seven years at North Chicago Community High School
3 Evening School following his retirement; and
4 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick was a member of numerous civic and
5 professional organizations; he served as President of the
6 North Chicago Club of Rotary International and North Chicago
7 Little League, and was the first President of Partners in
8 Progress With North Chicago School District 187 Foundation;
9 he was a Paul Harris Fellow; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick was listed in the 1976-77 edition
11 of Who's Who in the Midwest and contributed materials for a
12 chapter to Guidance: Principles and Services by Frank W.
13 Miller; and
14 WHEREAS, The passing of Mr. Tomkovick has been deeply
15 felt by all who knew him, especially his wife, Joan
16 (Johnston); his three children, John (Nancy), Charles, and
17 Julianne; his granddaughter, Jessica; his foster daughter,
18 Joanne (John) Zimmerman; his three foster granddaughters,
19 Anne (Mark) Overby, Dara (Jim) Schulenberg, and Ria (Andrew)
20 Sharon; his foster great-grandson, Max Overby; his two foster
21 great-granddaughters, Madeline Schulenberg and Mason Sharon;
