In May 1791, he removed to Durham, Green Couty, NY with six children.
He sold his house and lands to Jonathan Walkley, Sr. He, with two ox
carts containing all his movables, located on the wast side of the
Catskill mountains, then an almost unbroken wilderness, with fortitude
and courage to battle with the disadvantages and sacrifices of many of
the comforts of life, to secure for his family the means to be useful
to society and the community, to establish schools, laws and good
order. He purchased farms for his three sons about three miles west of
him. They settled there for a few years and then sold out, two of them
removing to Wyoming county, where one died, when the other removed to
Buffalo and died also. The third son died soon after. He was a soldier
three different periods, and was with Gen Gates at the surrender of Gen
Burgoyne at Ticonderoga. He was the first militia captain of the town.
Afterwards he was persuaded by the town officers to keep a public house
for the benefit of the trading community, which he did for about twenty
years, receiving liberal support and the confidence of the public
generally. He died at the age of 73, leaving his farm to his coungest
son, after paying all the legacies and demands upon it. To him also he
committed the care of his wife, who had become blind and dependent. She
died at the age of 78.
