Daniel Horsford was an early settler with Capt. Obadiah Horsford at
Hebron going there soon after 1705. In 1741 he bought land in Canaan,
CT., and moved there, where he was associated with his half brother
Timothy. Daniel and his wife were admitted to the Canaan church as from
Hebron, Jan. 7, 1754. He was Lt. and later Capt. in the train band at
Canaan. Evidently Daniel was an active business man as he was a miller
and also interested in iron works. On Nov. 1, 1752 he and his som
William bought House Lot No. 44 in Williamstown, MA. While Daniel lived
to a good old age his end was sudden and terrible; he burned to death.
The inscription on his tombstone at Grassy Hill Burying Ground, Canaan,
is as follows "In fiery flames my spirit fled And left my flesh to burn
and fry . Now I am numbered with the dead, Mortals, remember you must
die."
