Lizzie's mother was Irish, and had four daughters and six sons.
Lizzie was not educated but taught herself how to read and write. She
would sit each evening and read murder mysteries to the children to
better learn to read. Her father was Jimmie I. Jenkinson (later
shortened to Jenkins). He was English and maybe some Irish. Born in
England. He was foreman on the building of the Northern Pacific
Railroad on across the country. He worked at least as far as the
Mississippi because when they finished the bridge at Omaha, he went
home and had his wife put the cloaks on the girls, and took them down
to the bridge because he wanted them to be the first females to cross
the bridge, and they were. He was the foreman as far as the Red River
at Moorhead (Minn). He disappeared (date unknown) possibly 1896. He
carried a large amount of cash to pay the workers, and it disappeared
with him. The thought was robbery and murder. The family was
considered quite wealthy at the time. They owned sand pits east of
Moorhead, and upon his death, his wife, not being knowledgeable about
things, was somehow rooked out of it. It was said that the sand that
was used to pave Fargo streets in about 1908 belong to them. The
Indians would come by the tent at times for whiskey and Jimmie would
sneak out the backside and his wife would tell the Indians that he was
gone. The family only kept the whiskey for medicinal purposes. Jimmie
was also a surveyor, and worked as far as the Missouri River at Mandan
N.D. He was working in that area during the time of the Custer
massacre. In 1896 Jimmie took the family in a covered wagon and headed
for the Ozarks in South Missouri from North Dakota. They bought 40
acres of pasture and orchard land and sold it many years later for $80.
Jimmie's wife went back to Nebraska and North and South Dakota to cook
for the thrashers in the harvest of the wheat fields. The family moved
to Moorhead in the summer of 1902 after the fire in April. They lived
there and Fargo until 1908 or 1909. They left North Dakota for good in
1919 and moved to Caldwell and Boise.
