Samuel, one of the eleven children of Thomas and Rebeckah Newell,
was baptized on Dec. 5, 1660, in Farmington, CT. On Dec 20, 1683, he
married Mary Hart, daughter of Capt. Thomas Hart, Esq., and his second
wife Ruth Hawkins Hart. (There is some question as to the spelling of
Hawkins/Howkins and as to the mother of Mary Hart as her father was
married twice and Mary may have been born to the first wife who is
unknown.) On Jan. 7, 1686, Samuel recorded the Newell homestead as
his own, as having been given him by his father. This 15 acre parcel
north of the homestead contained land for plowing and planting,
together with a "convenient way for carts and carriages." This was
probably the beginning of the present Avon Road, now known as College
Highway. Samuel was admitted to the church in Farmingrton on Dec. 11,
1687, and his wife Mary on June 9 of the same year. He held the
military rank of ensign. Samuel and Mary had seven children. Mary died
on April 5, 1752. Samuel died on Feb. 15, 1753 in his 93rd year. Samuel
was baptized 5 Dec, 1660 in Farmington. On Decem- ber 20, 1683 he
married Mary, daughter of Thomas Hart, Esq. and Ruth (Hawkins) Hart.
He was admitted to the church in Farming- ton, 11 Dec, 1687 and she 9
June of the same year. On 7 Jan, 1686, Samuel recorded the Newell
homestead as his own, as having been given him by his father. This 15
acre parcel north of the homestead contained land for plowing and
planting, together with a "convenient way for carts and carriages."
This was probably the beginning of the present Avon Road, now know as
College Highway. He died 15 Feb, 1753 in his 93rd year. He held the
military rank of ensign. Mary died 5 April, 1752. The following is the
will of Samuel Newell Sr.: Know all men by these presents, that I,
Samuel Newell, senior, of Farmington, in the county of Hartford, in
the colony of Connecticut, in New England, that on ye account of
parental love which I have and do bare unto my eldest son, Samuel
Newell, of Farmington, aforesaid, and therefore do five, Grant, convey
& confirm unto him, my son Samuel Newell and his heires & assigns
forever, all ye right that I have, might, should, or ought to have in
that peace or part of Comon and undivided land in ye town of
Farmington, lying on ye little plain called the plain which is ye one
full half part of that lot on said plain drawn and to be laid out on ye
right of my honoured father, Thomas Newell, 1st, in said Farmington,
to have and to hold said given and granted premises, with the
appurtenance thereof to him, my son, ye said Samuel Newell, and to his
heirs and assigns, to his and to their own proper use and behoof
forever. Further, I ye Samuel Newell, senior, do hereby covenant and
ingage unto him my son ye said Samuel Newell, that at ye times of the
ensealing of these presents I am well siesed of ye same as a good
indefeasible estate in feoffments, and that the premises shall remain
and continue to him, my son, ye said Samuel Newell, his heires and
assigns forever, without and reserve, reclaim, chalange or
contradiction whatsoever. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my
hand and seale the 31st day of May, in ye eighteenth year of ye Reign
of King George ye Second, aforesaid, of great Brittain, 1745. Ye word
"Eldest" between ye 3d & 4th lines, and ye words "all ye Right" between
ye 5th and 6th lines enterloined before signing. Samuel Newell Signed,
sealed and delivered in the presence of John Hart Nathaniel Newell
Hartford, ss Farmington, May ye 31st A.D. 1745 Samuel Newell, senior,
who executed this deed, came in person and acknowledged the same to be
his act and deed before John Hart, Justis Peace
