Graduated from West Point in 1852, frontier duty. 1861, Capt. in 1st
U.S. Cavalry, Wilson's Creek. September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of
Volunteers. Commanded a division at New Market, Island No. 10, advance
on Corinth. Chief of cavalry in Army of the Cumberland. November,
1862, promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Stone's River, Tullahoma
campaign, commanded IV Division/IV Corps in Atlanta campaign. Commanded
IV Corps. at Spring Hill, Franklin (wounded) - Medal of Honor.
After the Civil War, continued in Army service, frontier duty,
commanded the Yellowstone expedition, retired 1892, governor of a
soldiers' home.
