"John made his first appearance in America, 4 August 1634, when he
received a grant of 4 acres of land in Newtown (Cambridge), MA.,
followed by others in 1635. In 1636 he removed with Thomas Hooker and
his congregation to Hartford. A map of Hartford as it existed in 1640
shows the house of John Hopkins, opposite the two islands, upon the
south bank of this stream (The Little River)." A letter written by John
to Gov. Winthrop is preserved. It explains that he has sent two
