Revised Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Emma and Gus,  Iona, Minn.,  1909

Gus and Emma,

The following has been submitted by the Hoffman's son, Jim, July, 2001.   See Jim's Hoffman web site at http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~hofmn/index.htm

Emma  was born to Clemens and Mary Bernadina Stallman at Breda Iowa in 1890.  In 1902 the family moved to a farm outside Iona, Minnesota.  Emma
was schooled through the sixth grade and after that helped at their farm and sometimes worked at the hotel in Iona.  In 1909 she was married to August (Gus)
Hoffman at St. Columba Catholic Church in Iona.  Gus was the son of Nic and Mary (Wupperfeld) Hoffman, also farmers near Iona.

For a time after their marriage, they continued to operate Gus’ small restaurant in Iona.  In about 1912 they purchased a grocery store in Fairmont, Minnesota
and built a new residence next door.  In 1918, Gus decided to go into farming and  purchased a farm near Grantsburg, Wisconsin.  They continued to farm
there until retiring in 1953.  After retiring, they spent many enjoyable winter months in San Benito, Texas, away from the severe winters in Grantsburg.

They were parents of eight children.  Gus died December 30, 1976 in Winona, Minnesota where they were then living with daughter Celesta.  He was 92.
Emma died February 2, 1986 also at Winona at the age of 96.  Both are buried at Grantsburg Riverside Cemetery.

Celesta, 1986 Emma and Celesta at their home in Winona, MN, 1986

When I attended the funeral services for my Uncle Lawrence Stallman in 1986, I was stopped by a couple of unknown (to me)  Stallmans to talk family history. When I looked
up, everyone had disappeared and I had no idea where to look for them! This couple had told me about Emma, a sister of Grandpa Clem that I wasn't  aware even existed. She
lived at Winona, MN. After driving around for awhile and not finding a bunch of cars gathered anywhere, I took this as a sign to head to Minnesota, so I did. What a wonderful
time I had with these two ladies and had my trusty voice-activated recorder with me and got most of our "serious Stallman" conversation on tape. The next day, we went to an
Italian cafe for lunch and had copies made of the many old photos you see on this web site. I am soooooooooooooo glad I "lost my way" that day in Breda, Iowa! Jim has a
wonderful story about Celesta on his Hoffman site. What a remarkable woman she is! Now I know why my aunt, Victoria Stallman, always remembered and kept in touch with
Celesta and Emma.     barbara
