HUSBAND NOTES:
William first appears in the Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky tax assessment records in 1834. At that time he did not appear to have taxable property, but the following year, 1835, he had two pieces of property: the 29x150 lot on the east side of Preston Street between Green and Walnut, where he lived, and a larger lot on Jefferson Street (between 18th & 19th Streets?) in Sayer's Enlargment. He continued to pay taxes on these properties as well as on improvements to his leased grocery store property until at least 1838. Some of the 1839 tax books appear to be missing, and his tax records were not found in the extant records. In 1840, his wife Alicia took on the responsiblity for paying tax on all of these properties. [LDS Microfilm, #8053 to #8055, Jefferson County Tax Books 1826-1846+]

William appears in Louisville city directories as a grocer. In 1836 his store was located on the northeast corner of Jefferson and 1st Streets. By 1838 the store was located on the southwest corner of Lafayette and Preston Streets, and he lived opposite the store on Preston Street. [LDS Microfilm, #160736 to 160738, and 160740, Louisville City Directory for the year 1836, 1838, 1841 and 1848, by G. Collins]

William filed a motion of his intent to become a citizen of the United States in Louisville Police Court on 2 October 1837. His motion indicated he had previously sworn his intent in Jefferson County Circuit Court, but the area in the Police Court record where that date of that previous motion was to have been recorded was left blank. A. W. Waller DC of the Jefferson County Circuit Court confirmed that David had sworn his intent in the Circuit Court previously. [LDS Microfilm, #0963726 Louisville, Kentucky Police Court Records, vol. 2-3, 1836-1838]

A plaintiff's index for [presumably] the Jefferson County Old Chancery Court shows that William filed suits against Elisha Applegate (bk 62, pp. 235) and against Polly Gracy (bk 64, pp. 26, 27, 30,33, 199). The suit against Polly Gracy may not have been resolved satisfactorily by the time of William's death, as the plaintiff's index for the Jefferson County Circuit Court shows a suit (#2419) naming William and his wife Alicia as plaintiffs against Polly Gracy in 1843. [LDS Microfilm, #1445947, Jefferson County, Kentucky Circuit Court Indexes]

WIFE NOTES:
At the time of her marriage, Alicia was of legal age and her parents were both dead. [The Filson Club Compilation, Jefferson County Virginia-Kentucky Early Marriages, (Owensboro, Kentucky: Cook & McDowell Publications, 1980), Book 2 June 1826-1837, p. 100]

After her husband died, Alicia continued to live in the house on the east side of Preston Street, between Green and Walnut. She also was responsible for the taxes on that property as well as a 50x200 foot (approximately) lot in Sayer's Enlargment and the improvements on the leased grocery store property on the corner of Lafayette and Preston Streets. [1850 United States Census, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky; and LDS Microfilm #8054-#8055, Jefferson County, Kentucky Tax Books 1836-1846+]

At some point between 1850 and 1860, Alicia, while retaining at least some of her real estate, began living with her daughter Amelia's family. In 1860 they lived in the 2nd Ward of Louisville, and in 1870 they lived in the 5th Ward. Interestingly, Alicia's son-in-law Elijah was a grocer! In 1860, Alicia owned $2500 in real estate, and in 1870, she owned $1000 in real estate. [1860 and 1870 United States Censuses, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky]

The "Record" newspaper [vol. V, no. 49] recorded the death of a Cecilia Ellaby, age 71 years in 1883. While the name does not match, this is likely to be the record of Alicia's death. Cecilia was buried in the St. Louis Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.
