St. Peter's United Church of Christ

Orwin, Schuylkill Co., PA

This church was originally known as Zion's Evangelical Lutheran and High German Reformed Congregation.  The congregation first worshipped in the old log parochial school house that was located in what is now known as Tower City.  In 1856 a new church was built in Johnstown (now Orwin) and named St. Peter's Union. (Lutheran & Reformed) The church is now known as St. Peter's United Church of Christ.

KESSLER Daniel Adam KESSLER, son of John and his wife Salisa (nee) BOHR, was born May 25th, 1891 in Porter Township, Schuylkill Co., Pa., was baptized June 19th, 1891 by Rev. Elias Henry, died July 25, 1891 - age two months.  Pastor Wm. F. Bond.
NEIDLINGER Jonathan, born in Berks Co., Pa. on the 6th day of May 1806, was baptized in infancy, confirmed in youth, taught the Lutheran Doctrine, was married to Anna Mary ROMBERGER in 1851, with whom he had 9 children, 5 sons and 4 daughters, died in Johnstown, Porter Township, Schuylkill Co., Pa. Steely, married Jacob BROWN Oct. 28, 1849, left husband, 7 sons, one daughter, 32 grand children, 4 brothers and 4 sisters, died in Reiner City, Schuylkill Co., Pa. LENGEL John, son of Adam LENGEL and wife Elizabeth (nee) BADDORF, born Nov. 14, 1825, in Pinegrove Tp., Schuy'l Co., Pa., baptized, May 4, 1826, by Rev. Boyer.  Sponsors: John & Mrs. Elizabeth BROWN, confirmed in Reformed faith by Rev. Gring, entered the holy state of marriage Aug. 5, 1854, with Miss Catherine BONAWITZ with whom he lived nearly 39 years.  Marriage was blessed with 9 children, 5 sons & 4 daughters.  4 are yet living, 1 son & 3 daughters.  Died Sunday, April 9, 1893.  Buried April 12, 1893 in Johnstown Cemetery by Lutheran Pastor, Wm. F. Bond.
KESSLER Howard Peter Reuben, son of Henry K., and wife Emma L. (nee) BOLTZ, born Johnstown, Porter Township, Schuy'l Co., Pa., baptized by Rev. E.S. Henry, July 18, 1888.  Died of lung fever and summer complaint July 28, 1893 at Orwin, Pa., the place of birth.  Aged 5 yrs 5 mo's and 29 days.  Buried in Johnstown Union Cemetery, July 31, 1893.  W.F. SCHNEIDER John, son of John S. & wife Catharine (nee) SCHWARTZ.  Born Nov. 29, 1822 in Hirshweilen, Bavaria, Germany.  Baptized in infancy & confirmed as youth in the Reformed Faith.  Married Louisa HAFFNER, Oct. 25, 1854.  Died at Baer Mt., Tower City, Pa. Jan. 2, 1894 of miner's asthma & la grippe.  Buried Jan. 5, 1894 in Johnstown Luth. & Reformed Cemetery, Orwin P.O., Pa.  Aged 71:1:3. By Rev's L.D. Steckel & Wm. F. Bond.
MYERS Geo. Washington M. Born at Pottsville, Pa. May 9, 1832.  Baptized in infancy.  Confirmed in 1850 in the Reformed Faith.  Died Jan. 12, 1894 in Johnstown, Orwin P.O., Pa., miner's asthma.  Aged 61:8:3.  Buried in Johnstown Luth. & Refd. Cemetery Jan. 15, 1894.  By Rev's L.D. Steckel, Refd. & Wm. F. Bond Luth.

HEBERLING Mrs. Catharine, d. of Abraham HAND & his wife Mary (nee) BROWN.  Born May 3, 1831, baptized in her infancy.  Confirmed Luth. by Rev. Neuman, married to Michael HEBERLING - 10 children, 8 living.  Died Feb. 26, 1894, Orwin, Pa. - cause dropsy.  Age 63:10:21.  Buried by Rev's W. Gamble, U.B. & myself, from the U.B. Ch. in Orwin in the Luth. & Reformed Cemetery, March 1, 1894.
WAGNER Gertie, daughter of Geo. Washington WAGNER, and his wife Sarah Anne (nee) PAUL, born on the 17th day of March, 1894, baptized March 22, 1894, buried in Johnstown Luth. & Ref. Cemetery March 24, 1894-age 6 days.  Rev. Wm. F. Bond officiated.
KNIGHT Mary Alice, daughter of Samuel KNIGHT and his wife Elizabeth (nee) MAUSE, born Nov. 19, 1888, at Orwin P.O., Pa.  Baptized by Rev. Geist, of the M.E. Church in Tower City, Pa.  Died of Scarlet fever Jan. 18, 1894 aged 5 yrs, 1 mo & 9 dys.  Buried at once without funeral.  Christian burial services were held appropriate for the occasion April 8, 1894 in St. Peter's Church.  Pastor Kershaw, supply of the M.E. Church, spoke in Eng., Rev. Wm. F. Bond in Germ. language.
NEIDLINGER Eva, daughter of Jonathan N. and his wife Mariah (nee) ROMBERGER.  Born March 5, 1852 Dauphin Co., Pa.  Baptized in infancy, confirmed in Reformed faith by Rev. B. John Kretzing in St. Peter's Union Church, Orwin, Pa.  Died at Williamstown, Dauphin Co., Pa. April 12, 1894 of consumption, aged 42:1:7.  Buried April 15th, 1894 in Johnstown Luth. and Reformed Cemetery.  Revs W.H. Dale & W. F. Bond.
BENDER Elizabeth, daughter of Nathaniel Green BENDER and his wife, Catherine (nee) SHUMPER.  Born May 7, 1891 in (Johnstown) Orwin, Pa.  Baptized Jan 21, 1894 in Johnstown, Pa. by Rev. W.F. Bond.  Died at the same place, Jan 21, 1894, aged 2:8:14.  Buried by undertaker Fred Dreisigaker Jan 22d.  Funeral services held May 6, 1894 together with regular services in the Germ. language.  Text Gen. 45:5.  Wm. Cemetery at Orwin, Pa.  Services in St. Peter's Luth. & Refm'd church, after the burial of husband and wife in one grave, by Revs. Wm. Beach and W.F. Bond.
