Gayle Harper (Submitted July 15, 1998)

I have been researching the Shipman family in Alabama and Mississippi and trying to trace them back to NJ and/or NY. I especially am trying to find Mary L. Shipman's parents, etc. Mary L. Shipman (b.abt 1819-NY or NJ) married Thomas P. Harper (b. abt 1806-VA) in Green County, AL on May 10, 1838. They lived in Pickens County, AL.(1850) and in Noxubee Co., MS (1860 & 1870). In the 1850 Pickens County, AL Census there is a Margaret C. (19-NY) living with them. Though it shows her as a Harper, I believe she might be a Shipman (possibly Mary's sister or niece). Also, there is a George Shipman in the same census - he is 33 born in NJ. George is listed as a Methodist Epis. Clergyman. In the 1860 Pickens Co., AL Census, There is an Edwin R. Shipman (38-NJ) with a wife and 3 children. In the same household are James H. Shipman (22-NY), and Frederick Shipman (20-NY). I am actively researching this family and I will gladly share information. Gayle Harper, Benton, Arkansas; fizznet@earthlink.net

John Shipman Hendricks (Submitted July 4, 1998)

Harman Shipman (1717-Mar 8, 1805) VS Herman Schuppmann. Harmon Shipman is my proven gggggGrandfather. He was supposedly born in Germany and supposedly arrived in West Jersey (Harmony Twp., Warren Co., NJ) about 1740. I have searched for his arrival date/ship on all the published ship's list for the past fifteen years with no success. What I have found suggests that a Herman Schuppmann (born before 1680), a 1709er could have been Harmon's father or gfather (or even an uncle). "Herman Schupman & vrouw (wife), 7 children who were on Captain Johann Blouwer's ship in the 5th party of Palatines in Holland in 1709 ("Embarkation List from Rotterdam, Holland"). Herman Schuppmann also appeared as part of "The New York Subsistence List of Palatine debtors to the British government for subsistence given either in New York City or in the Hudson River settlements, from their landing in 1710 to September 1712. Herman Schuppmann made his initial appearance on the Hunter Lists (New York Palatine Subsistence Lists of Governor Robert Hunter) on 1 July 1710 with 6 persons over 10 years of age and 2 persons under 10 years of age. In "The Palatine Families of New York by Henry Z. Jones, Jr., 1985, pages 941-3, the author lists probable issue to include: Nicholas, Catharina, Friederich and Jacob. He also states that Harmon Shipman could have been a part of this family. MY QUERY: Does anyone researching the Shipman name have a suggestion of how I might resolve the foregoing possible relationship OR does anyone have documented information on the parents of Harmon Shipman? Thank you, John Shipman Hendricks jshendricks@earthlink.net

In Bedford Co. TN I found some deeds with familiar Shipman names, but they don't seem to tie in with family groups I've seen. DB E, p. 297 refers to grant to Daniel Shipman, 22 Oct 1814 and is wiitnessed by Sally & Amelia Shipman. DB H, p. 380, 1817 is a conveyance from Daniel Sr. to Charles and Jacob Shipman and witnessed by Reuben Shipman. DB GG, p. 140 refers to William Shipman's old line (20 Jun 1837). Do these people tie in with those of Daniel and Elizabeth Burleson? Francie Lautner: lautnerd@cyberramp.net

Warrferber (Submitted December 9, 1997)

I am attempting to determine with certainty the connection between Edward Shipman, an Englishman who settled in Saybrook, Conn., in 1635, and Jacob Shipman, who left Saybrook for New Jersey. Jacob obtained a plantation in Tewksbury, NJ., in 1754. His son, Mathias Shipman, left Saybrook in company with one Isaac Hendershot, about 1747, and also settled in the German Valley of New Jersey. Although we are fairly sure that this was the only Shipman family in Saybrook at this early colonial period, we are missing probably one or two generations between Edward and Jacob.
