Nathan Shipman
Nathan SHIPMAN was the son of Abraham and Esther/Easter (GARRISON) SHIPMAN. He was born in the section of Greene County, Missouri that is now known as Christian County on 11 July 1842. Besides Nathan, Abraham and Esther/Easter had four other children that are known of: Matilda, born in 1837; Caroline, born about 1845; Sarah, born in 1848; and Malinda born about 1852.
Nathan SHIPMAN served in the Civil War as a private. First, he served in Captain Thomas W.Alred's Company "I" Greene County Missouri Home Guard. He was enrolled on 10 June, 1861 and discharged on 10 August, 1861. Second, he served in Company "H" 6th Provisional Regiment, enrolled Missouri Militia. He was enrolled on 1st April, 1863.
On 8 November, 1863, Nathan SHIPMAN married Sarah Jane HART, daughter of John and Mary HART, in Christian County, Missouri. Witnesses to the marriage were Joseph H. Johnson and Elizabeth (HART) Johnson, Sarah's brother-in-law and her sister..
Children born to Nathan and Sarah Jane SHIPMAN were: John, born 8th September, 1864; Abraham, born 6th January, 1866; Ben (died in childhood, dates unknown); Nancy Ann, born 3rd December, 1868; Eliza Jane, born 14th February, 1870; Dillard, born 31st October, 1871/72; Amanda, born 13th July, 1874; and Lula Belle, born 13th January, 1877.
According to his obituary, Nathan SHIPMAN was converted and joined the Smyrna Baptist Church in 1891. He and his wife, Sarah Jane, and son Dillard are listed among the earlier members of the church.
Nathan SHIPMAN died on 11 July, 1925 in Christian County, Missouri. His wife, Sarah Jane preceded him in death in 1922.
