Sprostons (and Sprosons and Sprowsons) began moving into the Stoke-on-Trent area in the late 1700s, as the Pottery Industry began to expand following the construction of the Trent & Mersey Canal. Many worked as potters in the pot banks in areas such as Wolstanton and Tunstall, while others worked as coal miners in and around Audley, coal being required to fuel the industry.
Some of these early Sprostons are buried in Tunstall Cemetery. Thanks to Derek for these photos.
   
Samuel Sproston, born 1862, his wife Amelia, and their son Samuel. Samuel senior was mayor of Stoke-on-Trent from 1921-1922. Stanier Sproston, his wife Edna, their daughter Harriet and grandaughter Mary. Stanier was the father of Samuel (see left), and was a part of the Stanier branch. He worked as a potter in the Pitts Hill area of Stoke-on-Trent.
     
     
Middlewich Cemetery    
The Middlewich War Memorial - the name B C Sproston can be seen. This is Benjamin Charles Sproston, born in 1916 and killed in action in 1944 in the Netherlands.
Also Annie, their beloved daughter & dearly loved wife of Harry Sumner, passed away 18th Aug 1952, aged 51 years. Also the above Harry Sumner passed away 7th May 1964 aged 62 years. In Heavenly Love Abiding

Treasured memories of Edward, beloved husband of Jane Sproston, who fell asleep 18th July 1941, aged 71.
Also Jane, his beloved wife, entered into rest 24th Oct 1945, aged 77 years.

In loving memory of Charles Frederick Sproston of Middlewich who died Nov 9th 1920 aged 56 years. Also Elizabeth Annie Sproston his beloved wife who died Mar 20th 1957 aged 91 years.
And 2nd Lieut. F. Alvin Sproston son of the above who fell in action in France July 29th 1918 aged 22 years.
Also William Thomas Sproston died May 1916 aged 40 years.

Also Charles Sproston of St Ann's Road Newton and late of the Tannery Middlewich who departed this life December 17th 1886 aged 76 years.
