Census |
The Census of Population in the UK. |
The first national census of the population in the UK was carried out in 1801, this has continued with a census taking place every 10 years, the last one being on April 29th 2001. The exception to this was 1941, no census was taken because of the Second World War. |
The first four censuses taken between 1801 and 1831 were little more than head counts because following the statistical analysis of the information the returns were destroyed. However, very occasionally you will find the odd return that has survived for this period. So it is to the 1841 census that we have to look first, this is the first census that has survived intact with details of names and other detailed information. Subsequent censuses carried more information. |

The Census is widely available, the Public Records Office has a complete set for the whole of the country and local records offices and libraries carry local censuses but it is always worth checking to see what they have before your visit. In addition the 1881 Census is available on CD Rom through the Church of the Latter Day Saints. You can order it from their web site, but if you are in the UK you are better contacting their distribution centre at |
