Firefighting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Engine 10 Statue
Outside the old Engine 10 firehouse in the Third Ward, this firefighter and companion await the next bell. Patriotic ribbons were added to the casting after September 11. The 1893 firehouse was built following the Third Ward Fire and has been restored to its previous glory.

LAST NAME INDEX TO "BEERTOWN BLAZES"
Researching any ancestors who may have been Milwaukee firefighters? Check my last name index to the Second Edition of "Beertown Blazes", a great history of firefighting in Milwaukee. The book makes mention of over 1,700 individuals who have been affiliated with the fire department since the 1840s - not a complete reference by any means, but still a great book. The files below contain last-name indexes for individuals mentioned in the book. An index of individuals identified in photographs follows the main index in each file. Corrections appreciated.

  • Part 1 (Last Name A-G)

  • Part 2 (Last Name H-P)

  • Part 3 (Last Name Q-Z)

  • Part 4 (Photo Index, All Surnames)

  • LISTING OF MILWAUKEE FIREFIGHTERS Posted March 18, 2003
The following file lists the names of individuals identified in a variety of sources as firefighters. Currently, 119 men are listed from the 1890s, and I hope to expand this file to include additional firefighters, as well as additional decades.
