Federal Census records do not exist for much of the country for 1890, having been destroyed by a fire at the Commerce Department in Washington, DC in January, 1921. The city directories published by Curtis, Wright and other companies provide a partial substitute to the missing census, and in some cases railroad workers are identified by railroad company. The files below contain the names of individuals from various cities who were listed as working for railroads, as well as those with typical railroad occupations but with no railroad listed. Obviously not all employees are listed in the directory, so these should be considered partial listings only. Note that engineers and firemen are generally not included unless some railroad affiliation was given in the directory.
