WELCOME!

I began family history research in an effort to record my children's ancestry. At some point I realized that I would never actually be “done,” but that I would continue to gather information. A web site allows for these frequent updates. It’s difficult, however, to present all the data in a manner easily understood. According to protocol, I have not posted anything (other than names) about living relatives. The easiest way to accomplish this was to cut off information at my parents’ generation. Admittedly, this is not an ideal solution because of the broad range of ages involved. Our parents had cousins with birth dates in the 1880’s as well as the 1920’s. Still, the data seems easier to follow if it is known where in the tree it begins. In the narratives that follow, the generations are indicated by paragraph indents. The deepest indent is my parents’ generation.

A few years ago I forced myself to concentrate on one branch at a time. As a result, the Grauer and Jermann branches are the most complete, but I have included my somewhat sketchy research of the other families as well. My apologies, in particular, to the Spinelli side of the tree. For multiple reasons, it’s difficult to find Italian records and, since this side immigrated quite recently, little has been discovered beyond the early 1900’s.

Included is a “feature story” section as a way to present items about people, places, or history that I find particularly interesting. This area will be updated as time permits.

Finally, if anyone has information to add - or, if you find any errors - please let me know.

Joseph Grauer Goes Off to College

Less than 4% of the population held a college degree in the early 1930’s. I can only guess how few traveled over 600 miles to do so, but that’s exactly what Joseph Grauer did.

What’s New

October 5, 2009 - The wonders of the internet! Several years ago I met online a cousin (2nd cousin actually). Carole’s grandmother, Katherine Grauer Doepp, and my grandfather, Julius Grauer were brother and sister. Not only had we never met, but neither of us knew the other existed. Last week she was visiting New Jersey from Missouri and we got to meet each other in person. She and her husband and my husband and myself had lunch together in a typical New Jersey diner. They’re great people and I’m only sorry we hadn’t met sooner.
