AUSTRALIAN CONNECTION
Dan Spilman's (1848-1915) maternal uncle emigrated to Australia
in 1854. Thomas Forman Aitken was born July 25, 1833 in Walcot,
Lincolnshire, England. He was the ninth of ten children born to his
parents Alexander Aitken and Eleanora Forman. Portrait of

Alexander Aitken was born on 22 Dec 1776 in Midhope,
Midlothian, Scotland. He walked down to Lincolnshire, England to seek
employment as a gardener. He died on 12 Jul 1865 in employment with Lady
Strickland at Walcot Hall, Alkborough as bailiff. Lady Stickland had a picture
painted of the old man and the family gave it to his grandaughter, Mary, when they
left the district for Cotesbach, Leicestershire. Portrait is now (2002) is with
Nigel Spilman at Whitton. Thomas' mother told him that he was named in
honour of fathers old master Mr. Thomas Goulton.

Thomas Forman Aitken came
to Australia on the "City of Sydney" in 1854 bound for Melbourne and Sydney.
His first employment was a gold miner at Steiglitz Victoria where he met Julia
and her Brother and his family. He married Julia Francome 12 jun 1856 St
Paul's Geelong, Victoria, Aust. He worked in a Timber mill at Daylesford ,
moved to Drumborg Victoria and carried on the timber milling business.
They had ten children.

Anne Eliza Aitken born April 18, 1857 in Steiglitz,
Victoria, Australia. She married Adolphus Jacques Grolimund in 1889 and
had 4 children Victor, Annie, Max and Elenora.

Martha Aitken was born December 09, 1858 in Creswick,
Victoria, Australia. She married Richard Tankard in 1884 and had a
daughter, Violet.

Alexander Aitken was born March 05, 1861 in Bullarook,
Victoria, Australia and died on July 29, 1941 at St. Arnaud, Victoria,
Australia. He married Mary Jane Ayling September 14, 1887 in Hamilton
and they had 6 children. Emily, Alice, Ivy (1892), Roy, Violet and Hazel.

Edward Aitken was born January 19, 1863 in Creswick,
Victoria, Australia and died in 1921.He married Mary Jane Bennet Ross on
December 30, 1885 in South Melbourne. They had eight children; William
1887-1946 married Annie Miles, Ethel Annie Aitken 1889-1936 married James
Graham Moore, Bert 1891-1950 married Beatrice Bond, Alice 1894-1969 married
Benjamin Ernest Cook, Norman 1896-1963 married Ivy Selena Carter, Allan
1899-1965 married Myrtle Victoria Beavis, Harold married Ida McDonald, and
Leonard James Aitken.

Eleanora Aitken was born July 11, 1865 at the Telegraph
Sawmill, Daylesford, Victoria, Australia.

Thomas Aitken was born August 14, 1867 at the Telegraph
Sawmill, Daylesford, Victoria, Australia and died November 04, 1945 in
Hamilton. He married Mary Butt on April 08, 1896. They had six children;
Violet, Alma, Annie, Mary, Dorothy and Harry. Thomas had a second wife,
Isabella Griffiths, who he married April 30, 1919.

Elizabeth (Besse) Aitken was born September 16, 1869 at
the Telegraph Sawmill, Daylesford, Victoria, Australia and died October 26,
1933 in Beverley W.A. She married John Hastings on October 27, 1897 in
Beverley W.A. and they had a son named Clayton Hastings.

Alice Maud Aitken was born October 21, 1871 at the
Telegraph Sawmill, Daylesford, Victoria, Australia and married Alfred Ernest
Augustus Bell in 1897. They had seven children; Marjorie, Olive, Leslie
Arthur, Julia, Constance, Elsie, Ernest.

George Aitken was born March 14, 1875 at Leonard's
Hill, Victoria, Australia and died in 1947. He married Margaret Graves
in 1911 in Smeaton, Victoria, Austrailia. The couple had three children;
Newton, Orrock and Joan.

Albert Aitken was born June 05, 1881 in Drumborg,
Victoria, Australia and died August 02, 1946 in Melbourne. He married
Sophie Winnifred McNamara on July 29, 1908 in Drumborg and they had six
children; Winnifred, Amy, Ernest, Noel, Mervyn and Eric.
