What is iCARA?

iCARA stands for Irish Caribbean Ancestry - Reconnecting through DNA. This is a project that aims to help people with Irish Caribbean ancestry to reconnect with both their ancestral Irish homeland and with their distant cousins living in Ireland today.

You can find out more about the project by clicking on the various sections to the left, or by watching this short 10-minute video that explains the concept behind iCARA.

The DNA Project

There is a specific DNA project associated with iCARA called the Irish Caribbean Y project and this is hosted at the commercial direct-to-consumer DNA-testing company FamilyTreeDNA

The goals of the DNA project are:

  1. to reconnect people with Irish Caribbean ancestry with their Irish "Ancestral Homeland"
  2. to reconnect them with distant Irish cousins
  3. to learn more about the Y-DNA genetic signature of people with Irish surnames and Caribbean ancestry (with a view to analysis and publication)
