Comparison of the I2b1 "Cont-1" subgroup with Genetic Family 1

Currently, the Spearin group is the largest subgroup of Cont1. There are 45 members in Cont1, 11 Spearin's and 34 non-Spearin's, the latter with origins in the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Ireland, England, and Belarus, which is in keeping with the suspected Dutch/German origins of those in GF1.

The table below compares the Cont 1 Y-DNA results with our results in GF1 and reveals several interesting discoveries.

Panel

Marker

Cont 1 modal value*

GF1 modal value

Exceptions (i.e. mutations) in GF1

1-37

607

14

14

Only 164729 differs on this marker (their value is 15) making this a unique mutation in both Cont1 and GF1. This could suggest that this is a relatively recent mutation, so any future members with this mutation are likely to be closely related to 164729.

576 (fm)

17

17

Cont 1 values range from 14-18. In GF1, only 209997 differs from the GF1 modal value (their value = 18)

570 (fm)

19

20

Cont 1 values range from 16-22. GF1 may be more closely related to those other Cont1 members who have a value of 20 on this marker (namely 14507 Roderick & 5559 MacLea South). In GF1, only 209997 differs from the GF1 modal value (their value = 21) - another unique mutation in the Cont-1 and GF1 groups.

CDY a&b  (fm)

34-38

33-41

This is a fast mutating marker and of limited use. But 2 members of GF1 have values for CDY b of 42 making them unique in both Cont 1 and GF1 (H1656 & 209996).

38-67

413 a&b (fm)

21-22

21-22

In GF1, H1223 has the unique mutation 22 at 413a. Only 1 other person in Cont1 has this value.

557 (fm)

15

16

7 of the 11 GF1 members have tested out to 67 markers. All have values of 16 whereas 21/27 of Cont1 are 15. GF1 may be more closely related to those other Cont1 members who have a value of 16 on this marker (e.g. 14507 Roderick & 70816 Razee).

446 (fm)

11

12

All but 2 of Cont1 are 11, all GF1 are 12, except H1223 which is 13 and hence unique.

68-111

589

11

10

In GF1, 2/2 are 10. In Cont1, 8/12 are 11, 4/12 are 10. GF1 may be more closely related to those other Cont1 members who have a value of 10 on this marker (e.g. 193789 Grijpstra & 70816 Razee).

522

12

13

In GF1, 5/5 are 13. In Cont1, 6/12 are 12, 4/12 are 13 and 2/12 are 14. GF1 may be more closely related to Cont1 member who has a value of 13 on this marker (namely 177954 Sakura [Chandler]).

712

20

21

In GF1, 2/2 are 21. In Cont1, the numbers for each value are: 19 (1), 20 (9), and 21 (2).

513

12

13

In GF1, 2/2 are 13. In Cont1, the numbers for each value are: 12 (10), 13 (1), and 14 (1).

552

26

28

In GF1, 5/5 are 28. In Cont1, the numbers for each value are: 26 (5), 27 (0), 28 (3), and 29 (4). GF1 may be more closely related to those other Cont1 members who have a value of 28 on this marker (namely 177954 Sakura (Chandler) & 70816 Razee).

Key to ID numbers (MDKA and Family ID number):

164729

Nicholas Sperin, 1795-1888, Limerick (US9,GA1)

209997

John Speiran, 1800-1852, Limerick (CAN7,ON2)

H1656

Tobias Spearin, 1812-1906, Limerick (CAN3,ON1)

209996

Tobias Speiran, 1812-1906, Limerick (CAN3,ON1)

H1223

Luke Spearin, 1833-1900, Limerick (IRL18, LIM10)

Firstly, several Spearin members have unique mutations compared to both Cont 1 and other members in GF1. These may ultimately help divide them into smaller subgroups both within Cont 1 and GF1:

  • 164729 (US9,GA1) has a unique value of 15 on marker DYS 607
  • 209997 (CAN7,ON2) has a unique value of 21 on marker DYS 570
  • H1656 & 209996 (CAN3,ON1) have unique values of 42 on marker CDYb
  • H1223 (IRL18, LIM10) has a unique value of 22 on marker DYS 413a

The comparison also tells us what additional markers might be of particular relevance in those GF1 members who have not tested out to 111 markers (namely 413 a&b, 557, 446, 589, 522, 712, 513, & 552).

And lastly, the comparison reveals that GF1 may be more closely related to the following non-Spearin members of Cont-1:

  • 70816 Razee - matches the GF1 modal value on markers 557, 589, & 552. MDKA = Rhode Island.
  • 14507 Roderick - matches on 570 & 557. MDKA not given.
  • 5559 MacLea South - matches on 570. MDKA not given.
  • 193789 Grijpstra - matches on 589. MDKA = Netherlands.
  • 177954 Sakura (Chandler) - matches on 522 & 552. MDKA not given.
Of note, there are 3 Chandler's in the non-Spearin Cont-1 group.
