... but don't be afraid to swim!

If your knowledge of genetics is pretty basic, or better still non-existent, then you've come to the right place.

These pages have a basic introduction to the science of genetics and how it applies to genealogy, the different tests that you can take, and how the results can be used to help you get over those Brick Walls in your traditional family research.

If you are thinking of taking a test, the section on the pros and cons of testing will take you through some of the issues you need to consider, such as privacy and confidentiality, and what happens when you turn up unexpected results.

The results of Spearin Y-DNA testing are also presented here, together with an interpretation of what they mean and what the next steps are for future research.

Watch "How DNA can help your Family Tree Research" a video of a presentation we gave at the "Back to Our Past" exhibition at the RDS, Dublin on 13th Oct 2012. Just click here
