Notes

The place names associated with events in this genealogy are recorded as given in the various sources used. While most German town or city names have remained unchanged during the period covered (1600 – present), the names and borders of states, provinces, counties etc., have changed numerous times as a result of war and political reorganization. All information derived from the International Genealogical Index for Germany is based on German jurisdictions as they existed from 1871 until World War I, regardless of earlier or later changes. Other sources may use the modern names and borders, or names and borders as they existed at the time of the individual whose information is being cited. No attempt has been made to standardize them within the genealogy, however the information provided in the table above  links all German place names cited in the genealogy with their modern jurisdiction. Each name in the table links to an entry containing additional information as described below. Where a place no longer exists as a separate entity, the name listed in the genealogy is included and subsequent changes are explained in the entry.

Place Entries

The entry for each municipality provides the following information (where available):

  • Land: (state) following German reunification in 1990;

  • Kreis (county), or Stadtkreis (for municipalities that are also effectively counties), or Kreisfreie Stadt (for municipalities that are independent of any county);

  • Coordinates: Map location expressed as degrees and minutes (for example 50.10N means 50 degrees 10 minutes north);

  • Population: Estimated inhabitants and date of estimate;

  • Coat of arms: The current municipal coat of arms, or where no arms were identified for a municipality, the arms of the municipality’s Kreis. Most images were obtained from the extensive collection of German Civic Heraldry at: http://www.ngw.nl/int/dld/germany.htm ; and

  • Description: A very brief description of the municipality’s origin and history.
