Cannelton, sent to penitentiary and died there. |

Finally, drunk, childbirth, death, Lynch law, escaped some night, turned

Indiana. In 1891 “White Caps” were exceedingly busy in the eastern part
of Dubois County. Mr. and Mrs. Coffee and Mrs. Rebecca Harmon were
whipped. A Mrs. Freeman, of Mentor (whose husband lived at Shoals) was
told to leave the next day or she would be whipped. On Wednesday night,
December 9, 1891, “White Caps” went to the residence of Bazil Abell,
near Mentor, Took John Lee out of his bed, stripped him naked, tied him
to a tree and whipped him unmercifully, left him tied to the tree and
went away. The “White Caps” cleaned up the county then the county
cleaned up the “White Caps”. Several were arrested
January 8, 1892. In May 4, 1892 Francis Hobbs, Daniel King, Thomas
Smith and Samuel Spraggins were sentenced to state prison as “White
Caps”.

Appalachians through Virginia and Carolinas into Georgia and ends at
Jackson, Mississippi.
