Benjamin Sofield b.1640 in Holland. He went to England to sail on the Caledonia in 1662 which landed at Morgan on Cheesequake Creek (NJ) also known as Perth Amboy. William Soper sailed for Georgia, 1784. A group of Saltzburgers, who were Lutheran, religious refugees, went from Augsburg to Rotterdam. From Rotterdam, 42 sailed through storms on The Purysburg, spending 3 days stranded on a sandbank, arriving Dover 22 Dec 1783. 30 people joined them there making 72 emigrants (+18 crew?) who left Dover for Gorgia 8 Jan 1784, arriving Charlston 2 Mar. On 11 Mar they pitched tents in Savannah then left to their allocated lands. Their settlement called Ebenezer was around 13 miles from Abercorn. The English supplied one year's supply of food, animals & farming equipment. Many names on the list of immigrants seem to be or been anglicised source - also 1 & 2

John Soper, formerly of Banwell insolvant farmer & grazier. Opposed at Debtors Court, Guildhall, Bristol 21 Jul 1840 (adjourned from 14 Jul) by Rev R P Jones, rector of Charfield on behalf of his sister who rented him a farm for £150 pa. In 27 Feb 1838 he owed £90 & half year rent almost due, he auctioned his stock, (part repaying parents & Mr Bruce), quit the farm & went to America he travelled & settled in Oct as clerk at Locomotive Engine Company, St Philips & lived in Cornwallis Place, Baptist Mills, Bristol. The rev obtained legal possesion, but Soper summoned witnesses before assize judges, who dismissed petition & charged Soper costs. Soper once apprenticed to Mr Bruce of Bristol who loaned £642 to establish a business. His father advanced £150 in 1819 & various sums at other times. John took silver cup & 11 spoons worth £50, but unaccounted for. After coming into money, he repaid £165 to his mother, £70 to Brages Fry, his attorney & nephew & £100 to Mr Bruce (£200 owed). Defence admitted he'd given fraudulant preference to his elderly parents for repayments. John who'd been in prison some days sentenced (?10 months prison if requested by any of his creditors?); in 'The Bristol Mercury' 25 Jul, from newspapers.bl.uk
