Ann Bradford grew up at Maiden Manor and was descended fr o m a line of at least four generations of Bradford in th e Be ntley, Yorkshire area dating back to 1435. Her great g randf ather, Peter Bradford, was the great great grandfathe r of W illiam Bradford, the longtime governor of the Plymou th colo ny founded by the Pilgrims.
The families probably were farmers as the area in which th e y lived possessed the richest soil for growing crops in a l l of Yorkshire. Their home village of Bentley is locate d i n the eastern part of the county about 15 miles northea st o f Sheffield, a town that became famous as a cutlery ma kin g center and later for its silversmiths.
After their marriage, Samuel and Ann moved up the road t o S ible Hedingham, Essex Co, England, a village six mile s nort h of Braintree and near the ancient Castle Hedingham . The y were the parents of five sons, two of whom died i n infanc y. At some point in the 1630's, Samuel uprooted hi s family , hoping to capitalize on opportunities for them i n the col onies.
