BLACK FAMILY OF KNOCKANDO, MORAYSHIRE, SCOTLAND
Thanks to my distant cousin's James Frank BLACK of Scotland and Anne Westcott of Yukon, Canada we have been able to make some headway with this family. BLACK is not an easy name to research!
John BLACK (born c1777) and Janet YOUNIE were married on 12 September 1805 in Knockando, Morayshire, (also known as Elginshire) Scotland. Janet YOUNIE (the daughter of John YOUNIE and Janet CHALMERS) was born on 22 February 1781 in Newland of Greenbank, Morayshire, Scotland.
John BLACK and Janet YOUNIE had the following children:
James BLACK (1) was born on 29 December 1809 at Knockando. In 1834 he married Margery (Margaret/May/Mary/Marjory) MATHIESON at Knockando. Margery was the daughter of Joseph MATHIESON and Rebecca ?and was baptised on 1st October 1815 at Forres, Morayshire. In the 1841 census James and family were living at Cardow, Knockando where he was listed as a blacksmith. They were also there in the 1851 and 1861 census. By 1881 James and Margery were living in Braeside, Liberton, Edinburgh. Margery died on the 3rd June 1886 at Liberton Dams, Liberton, Edinburgh aged 74 years and James died on 27 April 1894 at 5 Marshalls Court, Greenside, Edinburgh age 83 years. James SIM, grandson was the witness for both death entries.
James BLACK and Margery MATHIESON had the following children:
Alexander BLACK (2) was born 5 March 1821 in Knockando, Morayshire. He married Janet (Jessie) HENDRY on the 2nd July 1842 in Elgin, Morayshire. Janet (Jessie) was the daughter of Alexander HENDRY and Elspeth ANDERSON, and was born on 18 December 1819 in Forres. By the 1881 census Alexander and family were living at 47 Harmony Row, Govan, Glasgow, where he is listed as a boilermaker. At his death (aged 64 years) on the 20 February 1886, he was listed as an Iron Ship fitter. Jessie died on the 10 August 1894 at 5 Barony Street Glasgow aged 74 years.
Alexander BLACK and Janet (Jessie) HENDRY had the following children;
Helen (Ellen) BLACK (3) was born on the 28 April 1834 at Strepside, Knockando, Morayshire, Scotland. In the 1841 census she is living at home with her parents at Cardow in Knockando. By 1851 she is a farm servant to James ROBERTSON at Mains, Knockando. At the age of 22, Helen gave birth to a son named James SIM. His father is given as George SIM, farmer of East Alves, Morayshire. In the 1861 census Helen is living in Edinburgh and working as a Tobacconists Shopwoman and James is at Knockando with his grandparents.
James SIM became a Civil Engineer and later a City Road Surveyor in Edinburgh. He appears as a witness at many of the weddings of his ˝ brothers and sisters and at the deaths of his grandparents. He died unmarried in 1923.
Helen BLACK and George SHAND were married on 5 June 1863 at 12 Forth Street, Edinburgh. For further information on the SHAND family see Shand of Elgin and Edinburgh. George died in 1878 and Helen died in 1892, both in Edinburgh.
Helen BLACK and George SHAND had the following children:
James BLACK (4) was born on the 22 August 1847 at Cardow, Knockando. In 1874 James married Mary NOLAN in Edinburgh. Mary NOLAN was born about 1847 possibly in Ireland. James BLACK and Mary NOLAN had the following children:
James BLACK born 1876 Colinton, Edinburgh. Last heard of in Cardiff, Wales.
Alexander BLACK born 1881 Edinburgh. Marr Catherine McWEENEY. Died 1917 Palestine.
