Vicksburg Miss
May 3 1863
Dear wife
I seat my self to let you know that I am wel as common tho I have had a bad
spel since I rote to you. I hope those lines may find you all wel. we have now
all returned from deer creek. from the rolling fork we staid but a short time
after I went to them. the regt started to grand gulf this morning ___ ____ ____
below. John and the rest of the boys went. they
is a few of us here at the old camp at vicksburg. Iread your kind letter and
sage and pepers that Clem brought but no provisions. it all spoilt. dear wife I
love to read letters from you. how I want to see you and the children. the
chiefest of my delight. I know you see a hard time and I dont think you claim
any thing more than your right. it is a hard time in war. dear wife I am glad
to hear that you are geting along so wel. I hope that god wil bless you in your
labours and reward you in the end. tel suda to spin me some breeches again I
come home. kiss all the children for me. we have bad water to drink in this
country but we are doing as wel as could be excpected. we got on the boat
tuesday and got off thursday. we see a heap of strange things in travling. tel
mother to have up a fat shoat against I come. I hope you and the children gets
milk and butter a plenty. butter is $2 per lb here. I guess I dont eat much of
that. I must close. pray for me and our weked nasion.
