Samuel Seward, Jr. was a son of Samuel Seward Sr. His mother's name is presently unknown. He was born in New Jersey @ 1765. He married Elsey Gentry, the daughter of James Gentry and Sarah Ann (?Claiborne) 22 October 1789. Their first son, Obadiah was born in North Carolina.

About 1791 Samuel and Elsey and infant son Obadiah settled in Hamilton County, Ohio, living for a while in the blockhouse at Carthage then settling on a tract of land near Mount Pleasant.The rest of the children were born in Hamilton County, Ohio.

In 1814 Letters of Administration were granted to Elsey Seward so Samuel probably died in that year. His widow Elsie married Ithmar White in 1820. She died some time in 1843 according to Ford's "History of Hamilton County, Ohio".

Wherefor now know ye that the said John Cleves Symmes, Register of this office for the time being on the ground above stated, has given, granted, assigned, transferred and set over unto the said Samuel Seward and to his heirs and assigns in fee simple forever all that forfeiture of one hundred and six acres and two thirds of an acre. . . in the Miami Purchase and County of Hamilton in the territory of the United States. . .signed by John Cleves Symmes 2 April, 1798

Ann Seward was born 4 April, 1792 in Hamilton County, Ohio. She married Daniel Jessup (4 April, 1792 to 28 August, 1845).

They had eleven children, six girls and five boys. I have the names of 8:

  • John S. b. 15, October 1814, d. 25 April, 1879.
    He married Miss Mary Young, daughter of Christian and Catherine Young 16 October, 1840 in LaPorte County, Indiana. They had 7 children.
  • Elsey, b. 12 August, 1816. She celebrated her 100th birthday in Overland Park, Kansas - no date of death indicated. She married Jesse Emory Corliss 10 June, 1836 in La Porte County, Indiana. They had four children, 2 boys and 2 girls. They moved to Kansas in 1857.
  • Irwin, b. 7 March, 1818, d. 1874 He married Miss Elizabeth Taylor 1 July, 1847, in Pinhook, Indiana
  • Abiezer Miles, b. 26 June, 1820, d. 25 July, 1907. He married Caroline Sharp 17 December, 1845.
  • Nancy, b. 15 November,1823. She died, unmarried in La Porte County, Indiana.
  • Sarah M., b. 19 October, 1827. She married Temple Windle 23 November, 1847.
  • Anjalettie, b. 9 November 1832, d. 24 December, 1914 in La Porte County, Indiana.She married Lyman Gould 24 December, 1855.
  • and Veola Jane, b. 13 October, 1834, d. 12 July, 1925 in La Porte County. She married John Grant 24 December, 1855.
Ann died in 1866. She is buried in the Door Village Cemetery in La Port County, Indiana.

James Seward was born 25 December, 1796. His first wife was Orriminah Compton (7 March,, 1800 to 21 February, 1836) whom he married 21 November, 1816 at Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. His second wife was Eliza Alice Ritchey. He had the following children.

  • Mary, b. 4 February, 1818, d. 15 January, 1856. Married ? Stoughton.
  • Mahala, b. 30 March, 1820, died 2 September, 1848. Married ? VanDyke
  • Martha, b. 9 February, 1822
  • Eliza, b. 22 April, 1824.
    She married Samuel Titus 12 June, 1842 at Mt. Pleasant, Ohio.
  • Sarah J., b. 9 February, 1826
  • Elias H., b. 29 June, 1828
  • Morris, b. 15 February, 1831, d. 4 May, 1851
  • Aaron C., b. 8 January, 1833, d. 13 January, 1833
  • Adelaide B., b. 10 November, 1842
  • and Bartholomew, b. 19 November, 1846, d. 23 January, 1847

Martin Seward, b. 19 October, 1807 married Mary Hill b. 20 December, 1815. He and his family remained in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. both he and his wife are buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Cincinnati.

    He married Martha Duce 17 August, 1856.

Martin died August 3, 1884. His wife Mary died 16 December, 1895.

Samuel Seward was born in 1798 and Joseph Orvin Seward was born in 1800. As these two boys are not mentioned in later guardianship appointments, it's assumed they died before their father.
