I started doing research on my Barlow family two years ago. I'm fascinated with the combination of persistence and luck it takes to uncover information. What follows is what I've discovered about this family to date. |
| I had good information to begin my search with. More than average, I think. My grandmother was orphaned when she was young. She lived with her grandfather until she married, and then he came to live with her and her new husband. At some point she typed up a page of the facts she had about her Barlow family and sent them to my parents. I found the following list in my mother's papers after her death. |
Robert Alexander Barlow: Born Dec. 14, 1836 at Tuscumbia, Alabama Died May, 1927 at Wichita, Kansas Sarah Ann Priscilla Jones: Born July 18, 1840 in the state of Tennessee Dies Jan. 19, 1924 at Wichita, Kansas Above married on September 26, 1867. Robert Alexander Barlow's mother was Ann Watt, born in Northern Alabama. Her people were from Wales and Ireland. His father was Henry Washington Barlow, born in Virginia. Born in 1869 in Yell County, Arkansas Died in 1901 at Muskogee, Oklahoma Robert Henry Barlow: Born July 7, 1868 at Dover, Arkansas Died in Monroe, Louisiana Feb. 16, 1895 Above were married in a double ring ceremony with Nettie Barlow and James W. Tate - Dec. 18, 1888 Norma Annie Barlow, only child, born Nov. 26, 1889 at Russellville, Ark. |
| In addition to the above information I had a few stories about Robert Alexander Barlow from my father - so I knew he'd fought for the south in the Civil War, and memories of my grandmother saying "If anyone inquires after your antecedants tell them you're a 'Virginia' Barlow." What follows is my work in progress: |
