Mrs. Teresa WATSON Thursday, February 7, 1946 (Front Page)
  Mrs. Teresa Watson, 83, life time of resident of Odell, passed away at her 
home Sunday, February 3 at 3:45 a. m., following a three month illness. Death 
was attributed to the infirmities of age.
The funeral was held at 9 a. m. Tuesday, February 5 at St. Paul's Church, Odell 
with Rev. J. M. Sheedy officiating. Burial took place in the family lot in 
St. Paul cemetery. The rosary was said at her home Monday evening at 8:30 p. m. 
Members of the Altar and Rosary Society said the rosary at 2:30 Monday afternoon.
A daughter of Thomas and Sarah Solon, Mrs. Watson was born July 7, 1862 at 
Shirley, Illinois near Bloomington,the family moving to Odell in 1872.
  Teresa Solon was married to John Watson in Odell, October 27, 1885, who has 
preceded her in death along with two daughters, Mrs. Mary Plumb and Loretta Watson. 
She is survived by four sons, Frank, of Bath, N. Y.; Edward and Luke of Alameda, 
Calif.; and Gregory at home. Also by five daughters 'Ruth and Helen and Mrs. Teresa 
Foley of Chicago, Mrs. Agnes Cannon of Ivesdale, Illinois and Grace at home. 
Also two sisters, Miss Nora Solon, who resided with her in Odell, Mrs. John 
Higgins of Chicago and one brother Joseph Solon of Hammond, Ind.
  She was a member of the St. Paul church and of the Altar and Rosary society.

  Word was received here this forenoon of the death of Tony Solon at St. Mary's 
hospital in Streator, early this morning. Solon was a Streator mortician and had 
submitted to a major operation Wednesday.
  Funeral services will ne held at 9 o'clock Monday morning from St. Mary's 
Catholic church in Streator.
  Mr. Solon had also been engaged in the automobile business in Streator for 
several years. He was a past president of the Illinois State Funeral Directors' 
association.

  Funeral services for Vincent Solon, 43, were held today in Hammond, Indiana. 
The deceased died Friday night, Feb. 8, at St. Margaret's hospital. Hammond after 
a week's illness from pneumonia.
  Vincent Solon was born April 28, 1902 at Graymont, Illinois, the son of Joseph 
and Elizabeth (Andrews) Solon. In 1903, the family moved to Hamlet, Indiana and 
later to Hammond. He was preceded in death by his mother January 26, 1937.
  His wife and three children survive. Also surviving are his father, Joseph Solon; 
three brothers Duane, Paul and Jerome Solon, all of Hammond; three sisters, 
Mrs. Helen Steele, Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. Evelyn Lauerman, Fowler, Indiana and 
Mrs. Catherine Volkman, Hammond, Indiana.
  The deceased was a nephew of Mrs. George L. Bigelow, this city.

  STREATOR -- The funeral for Leonard B. Solon, 68, 102 E. Sumner St., will be 
held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church with burial in 
St. Mary's Cemetery.
  Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Solon Funeral Home, where the 
rosary will be said at 7 p.m. and the Elks Lodge will conduct rites at 7:30 p.m.
  Mr. Solon died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 1985, at Mesa, Ariz.
  He was born Aug. 20, 1916, at Streator, a son of Leonard and Nellie Solon. 
He was married to Helen McGuire.
  Mr. Solon formerly owned Solon Insurance Agency, retiring in 1984. He was a 
Navy veteran of World War II.
  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, holding the Third and Fourth 
Degrees, and was a member of the Streator Elks Lodge, American Legion Post 
and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
  Survivors include his wife; one son, Thomas of Danville; three daughters, 
Sarah Solon of Pasadena, Calif., Mrs. Peggy Reed of Los Angeles, Calif., and 
Mrs. Jean Scott of Carencro, La.; and two grandchildren.
  Two brothers preceded him in death.

Thomas SOLON Friday, May 11, 1906 (page 1, column 3)
  The body of Thomas Solon, who died at St. Joseph's hospital in Joliet, Tuesday, 
was brought here for burial, Thursday morning. The services were held at St. Mary's 
church. Mr. Solon used to live in Owego township. He for some years lived in Pontiac 
until his health failed and he went to the hospital. His family live in Odell. 
He leaves a wife, four daughters and one son.

  The funeral of Miss Florence Solon took place at Odell last Saturday. A large 
number from this city, also some from Flanagan and Lexington, were in attendance.

Obituary: Charles S. Gilchrese
Charles S. Gilchrese, 70, of Alton died at 4 a.m. Wednesday at Christian Northeast Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Sept. 26, 1922, in Somerville, Tenn., the son of Daniel and Paulene Finney Gilchrese. He married Nellie Burnette in 1947. Mr. Gilchrese had worked as a laborer. Surviving are his wife, Nellie; six sons, Charles, Randy, Mark and Vincent Gilchrese, all of Springfield, Ronnie Gilchrese and Samuel Perry, both of Alton; 13 daughters, Mary Williams, Margaret Rawls, Sheila Martin, Yvonne, Priscilla and Sandra Gilchrese, all of Springfield, Charlotte Gilchrese of Chicago, Kimberly Gilchrese of St. Louis, Mo., Gloria Burnett, Janice Solon, Tameka and Tamona Gilchrese, all of Alton, and Nancy McCulley of Somerville, Tenn.; 30 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, James Gilchrese of Springfield, Ed Warr of Philadelphia, Pa., and Sylvester and Lester Warr, both of Alton; two sisters, Dorothy Ingram of Alton and Irene Willis of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church, Alton, with the Rev. Shaughneysy Small Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Upper Alton Cemetery. Williams Mortuary, Alton, is in charge of arrangements.

St. Mary's Cemetery History 

INTRODUCTION 

ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CEMETERY is located on County Line road south of Maple Park, Illinois
in Section 1 Township 39 North Range 5 East. The cemetery is on the west side of County 
Line road with two driveways secured with gates. 

"The property owned by George Bucklin of the Town of Cortland, County of DeKalb and 
State of Illinois was deeded to Dennis Butler, James Butler, John Guerin, Patrick Welch,
Mike Welch and Anthony Solin all of the Town of Pierce, DeKalb County for $200.00, to wit:
 
Commencing at the S. E. corner of the North half of the N. E. 1/4 Section one (1) in
Township 39 Range 5 East of the Third Principal Merdidian, thence running West said 
line between John Guerin and George Bucklin one hundred and sixty rods (160), thence 
North twenty rods (20), thence East sixteen rods (16) to the center of the road, thence
along the center of the road twenty (20) rods to the place of beginning and containing
two (2) acres. 

And it is further agreed that the parties of the second part is to make all the fence
around said two (2) acres and keep it in repair.

A certain Lot or parcel of land situated in the N.E. 1/4 of Sec one (1) Twp 39 
Range 5 East situatedin the Town of Pierce containing two (2) acres which was 
deeded by George Bucklin to Dennis Butler and others as trustees for a Catholic 
Burying Ground. Reserving, however, two burying lots East of said burying lots 
16 feet wide by 32 feet in length. 

One of these burying lots cover the remains of the late Dennis Butler as shown 
by a tombstone erected thereon. The intent being to use the same lot for Henry 
Butler (son of the deceased) and his family and also for deceased daughter, 
Mary O'Brien nee Butler, wife of John O'Brien and for her family at the present 
time living near DeKalb. 

The other burying lot is reserved for the use of myself and my son, James E. Butler 
and family. This last described burying lot lays Southwest of the Dennis Butler 
burying ground.

Mrs. Catherine SOLAN Sunday, May 28, 1950 (Submitted by Kay Scott) 
Photo included with it.
  Mrs. Catherine Solan, of 6743 Columbia, Hammond, resident for 44 years and mother of a 
police officer and five well known businessmen, died Friday in St. Margaret Hospital. Her 
husband, the late Michael Solan, founded the Southeast Coal and Excavating firms now 
operated by two of the sons.
  Mrs. Solan, an active member of the Sisterhood of Our Lady of Perpetual Hope of St. 
Michael Ukranian church of Hammond, was a practicing advocate of good fellowship.
  Funeral services will be held at Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the residence and at 10 a.m. in 
the church with Rev. Paul Darmoe officiating.  Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.  Remains 
may be viewed in the home after 5 p.m. Sunday.  The Czechanski funeral home, 248 155th Pl.,
Calumet City, is in charge of arrangements.
  Survivors are six sons, Michael, a traffic officer; Peter, floral shop owner; Steve, 
coal dealer; John, construction engineer; and Joseph, store owner; also three daughters, 
Mrs. Michael Petroff of Hammond, Mrs. Joseph Walotka, of Highland, and Mrs. John Zelic of
Dayton; 25 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

  Joseph Solon, 88, of 5927 Columbia Ave., Hammond, died this morning in St. Margaret 
Hospital. A resident of Hammond for 46 years, he was formerly employed by the Standard 
Oil Co.
  Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Dalton Funeral Home, 
727 Carroll St., Hammond; and at 9 a.m. in All Saints Church, the Rev. Charles Seberger
officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Saturday.  The rosary 
will be recited Sunday at 8 p.m.
  Solon is survived by the Widow, Mayme; three sons, Dwane and Edward J. of Hammond, 
and Paul H. of Kankakee, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Catherine Volkman of Schererville, 
Mrs. Evelyn Laureman of Fowler, Ind., and Mrs. Helen Gardener of Detroit, Mich.; nine 
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

  Mrs. Edna Solon, 52, of 5630 Claude Ave., Hammond, died early this morning in 
St. Margaret Hospital. 
  Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Snyder Funeral Home, Hihman 
and Warren streets, Hammond, with the Rev. Paul Schaeffer officiating. Burial will 
be in Concordia Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Saturday.
  A lifelong resident of Hammond and a supervisor for Illinois Bell Telephone Co., 
Mrs. Solon is survived by two sons, Robert and James, and one daughter, Lovell Solon, 
all of Hammond; four sisters, Mrs. Clara Madura and Mrs. Alma Radloff of Whiting, 
Mrs. Rose Rider and Miss Agnes Scheuneman of Hammond; one brother, William Scheuneman 
of Hammond; and two grandchildren.

  Anna Solan, age 89, of Hammond passed away Tuesday, May 18, 1993.
She is survived by three sons, Michael (Lu), Peter, Jr. (Lucille) and Richard (Verna)

granddaughter; one brother, Peter (Mary) Evans of Munster; two sisters, Olga (George)

great nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

  Mrs. Solan was a lifelong resident of Hammond; member of St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox 
Church and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Sisterhood; member of American Legion Post 126 
Auxiliary. She and her late husband Peter, Sr. were the original founders of Solan's 
Greenhouse in Hammond.

  John Solan, 89, of Munster, IN. passed away Saturday, October 14, 1995. He is 
survived by his loving daughter, Joanne of Munster; two brothers, Anthony (Mary)

great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Antoinette Solan of Hammond and numerous nieces 
and nephews.

  Nicki Lynn Solan, 44, of Hammond passed away Friday August 15, 1997.
She is survived by her parents, Richard and Verna Solan of Hammond; two brothers,

Jonathan and Teryn; several aunts, uncles and cousins, and many special friends.

  Mary M. Solon (nee Stevens), 75, of Highland, passed away Thursday September 25, 1997.
Survived by one son, Jack (Jean) Solon of Wheeling, Illinois; three daughters, Diane (Tom)
Hubler of Highland, Sherry (Hersh) Kohut of California and Susan Swick of Schererville; 
two sisters, Nellie Swanson of Highland and Barbara (Bill) Boyd of California; 12 
grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in 
death by her husband, Edward J. Solon, in 1992.
  Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, September 28, 1997 at Kuiper 
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Milligan officiating. Cremation, Calumet Park,
Merrillville. Friends are invited to meet with the family Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. 
at the Kuiper Funeral Home Chapel, 9039 Kleinman Road (2 blocks south of Ridge Road), 
Highland, Indiana. 
  Mrs. Solon was retired from Illinois Bell with 31 years of service and was a member 
of the Pioneer Club at Illinois Bell. Memorials may be given to the Society for 
Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, 2904-B, Marmat Road, Baltimore, MD. 21209.

Obituary: Josephine D. Solon
Dec. 20, 1915 - Jan. 6, 1999 Josephine Downey Solon, 83, of 28947 Downey Street, Dowagiac, Mich., died of natural causes at midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Lee Memorial Hospital. Josephine was born in Dowagiac on Dec. 20, 1915, to Margaret (Ottolleran) and Andrew Downey. She graduated from Dowagiac High School and attended college for two years. On July 6, 1940, she married Joseph P. Solon, a former Chicago Police sergeant, in Dowagiac. He preceded her in death on Aug. 22, 1974. Josephine was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.
Mrs. Solon was employed as a legal secretary in Chicago, Ill. She was a member of the Dowagiac Junior Arts Club and Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Dowagiac. She is survived by a daughter, Colleen (Michael) Winter of Aurora, Ill.; three grandchildren, Michael Winter, Morna (Tim) Flanagan and Megan (Derek) Davis, all of Forrest Park, Ill. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, in Sacred Heart of Mary Church. Father Leo Taubitz will officiate the service. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday in the Groner Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Obituary: Katherine F.W. McElhaney
FORT WORTH - Katherine Florence Walker McElheny, 92, a retired librarian, died Saturday June 14, 1997, at a Fort Worth care center. Memorial service: 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth. Entombment: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Restland Abbey in Dallas. Memorials: Stephen Ministry of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth; Pastoral Care Fund of University Christian Church; or a charity of choice. Katherine McElheny was born Dec. 7, 1904, in Ashburn, Ga. Her parents were Edwin Cephas Walker and Florence Amelia Eubanks Walker. She graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, Ga. She graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon Ga. in 1926. She graduated from Emory University Library School, in Atlanta Ga. in 1929. She was assistant librarian at Florida State College for Women, now Florida State University, in Tallahassee, Fla. She was catalog librarian for Fondren Library of Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She married Oscar Kilbourn McElheny of Dallas June 23, 1937. She spent two years in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1945 and 1946. She returned to Dallas in 1948, living there until 1983 when she moved to Fort Worth. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Yomac Class, Chapter CH of P.E.O. and the Fort Worth Lecture Foundation and The Pierian Club of Dallas. She was a volunteer at Trinity Terrace in the library and the country store. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin Cephas Walker and Florence Amelia Eubanks Walker; brothers, Grant Williams, Col. Freeman W. Williams; and sisters, Sue Wade and Aline Klaudt and her husband, Oscar Kilbourn McElheny. Survivors: Daughters, Geraldine McElheny Skinner and her husband, James B. Skinner of Abilene; Amelia Anne McElheny Sanders and her husband, Dr. Charles H. Sanders of Fort Worth, Katherine Walker McElheny Solon and her husband, Paul D. Solon of St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren, James M. Skinner of Abilene, Mack C. Skinner and his wife, Debbie of Clyde, Charles K. Sanders and his wife, Jennifer Keneally of Paris, France, David R. Sanders and his wife, Laurie Shields-Sanders of San Antonio, Jan K. Solon, Katherine J. Solon, both of St. Paul, Minn.; great-grandchild, Allison K. Skinner of Clyde; nieces, Suzanne Wade Byrd, June Austin Harker, Ann Ketjil Williams; and nephews, David Freeman Williams and John Christopher Williams.
