He was a gold miner, recently arrived from Northern Ireland. She was born in Bathurst around 1843. Together they raised eleven children on the banks of the Turon river near the gold town of Sofala. At the turn of the century Samuel and Mary Ann moved from Sofala to Portland. A number of their children remained in Sofala and the surrounding districts.
