L. GORDON SODEN, 72, FUNERAL DIRECTOR

Services for L. Gordon Soden, 72, of Bloomfield will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Ave., Verona.

Mr. Soden, who was a licensed funeral director, died Tuesday in St. Michael's Medical Center, Newark.

In 1952, he began working for Arthur K. Brown Inc. "Home for Services", in Montclair.  He became treasurer of the firm in 1962,  vice president and manager in 1967, and president in 1978 before retiring in 1990.

Mr. Soden was one of the original members of the New Jersey Volunteer Emergency Funeral Directors Corps, which served in the event of disaster.

He was a member of the National Selected Morticians in Evanston,  the Essex & Union Funeral Directors Association,  and the New Jersey State and National Funeral Directors Associations.

He was a Navy veteran of World War Ii, and a member of the Upper Montclair Country Club, Clifton.

Born in Montclair, he lived most of his life in Bloomfield.

MILDRED BULL, HAMILTON, NJ

Hamilton - Mildren Soden Bull, 90, died Wednesday (19 May 1999).  Born in Bordentown, she lived in Ewing before moving to Hamilton in 1992.  She retired as a state secretary after 23 years.  She was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Wife of the late Theodore R. Bull,  mother of the late Theodore Soden Bull,  and sister of the late Mary E. Parker and Robert B. Steen,  she is survived by a daughter,  Lois E. Bull of Mercerville;  three sisters and brothers-in-law,  Marion C. and James Schaefer of Robbinsville,  Elizabeth and Thomas Carr of Bordentown  and Geraldine and William Warrack of Hamilton;  five grandchildren;  13 great-grandchildren;  and nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in the First Presbyterian church of Ewing Cemetery.  Calling hours will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Saul Colonial Home.

MYRTLE DEATHERAGE, 88

Toms River - Funeral services for Myrtle Deatherage, 88, of Toms River, who died Saturday at Community Medical Center, will be conducted Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square by Pastor Doug Valentine of the Hamilton Square Baptist Church.  Interment will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Hamilton Square Baptist Church Cemetery.  Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Colonial Home.

Born in Hamilton Square, Miss Deatherage resided in Toms River for 49 years.  She retired as a toll and die maker after 20 years with General Motors Corp. Fisher Body Division.

   Daughter of the late Charles and Eva Soden Deatherage, she is survived by five nieces,  Betty Luther,  Celia May Rajeski,  Marlene D. Blacker,  Shirley Holt,  and Doris Deatherage.

MRS. THOMAS SODEN, 65, RIDGEFIELD, WASH.

MRS. SODEN ANSWERS CALL -  Mrs. Thomas Soden, aged 65 years, died at the family home three miles east of here on Saturday last.

   Mrs. Soden had been a resident of Clarke county for the past 24 years, coming here from Kansas in 1887.  Besides her husband she leaves seven children to mourn her loss. The children who survive her are Mrs. E. M. Dittmer, Mrs. Fred Mathys, T. W. Soden and B. L. Soden, all of Vancouver and Mrs. G. W. Horn, Mrs. A. M. Edmonds and R. R. Soden of this place.
   The funeral services were held at the family home on Monday
afternoon and burial was made in Pioneer cemetery.

  Mabel Corinne Soden, a retired Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Co. employee, died Thursday in Vancouver. She was 82.  

Born Oct. 15, 1899, in the Pioneer area near Ridgefield, she lived in Clark County all of her life. She last resided at 2617 NW 104 Street, Vancouver, WA.  

She was a member of the Mazama Club of Portland and Oregon and Telephone Company Pioneers.  

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Vancouver Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ronald Coulter officiating.  Burial will be at the Park Hill Cemetery.

  Memorials may be made to the Clark County Humane Society.

        William Edward (Curly) Downs, 46, succumbed to several months' illness Monday afternoon, May 27, 1938, at his home, 112 E. Eighteenth str., where he had lived for the past 23 years.  A resident of Vancouver for 40 years, Mr. Downs was a member of the Vancouver Elks.

        Among survivors are the widow,  Lillian Soden Downs; one daughter, Emilie Downs of Vancouver, WA; one brother, A.K. Downs of Portland, OR; two sisters, Mrs. M.E. Marvin of Portland, OR and Mrs. E.D. Lazarus of  California; and his stepmother, Mrs. E. Downs of Portland, OR.

        Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in Limbers' chapel with the Rev. W. Lawrence Wells officiating. Iris Shackelton will be the soloist, accompanied at the harp by Mrs. H. Rider, and interment will be in the Park Hill cemetery.

     COQUILLE, Oregon . . . Funeral services for Katie Clara Anderson, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Pioneer United Methodist Church in Coquille with the Rev. Gerald Nelson officiating. Private interment will follow at Ocean View Memory Gardens, Coos Bay.

      She was born Oct. 30, 1902, at Vancouver, WA and died April 4 at North Bend. She and Roscoe "Andy" Anderson were married Oct. 1, 1924, at Coquille, and he preceded her in death Jan. 30, 1969. Mrs. Anderson was a resident of Coos County since 1921. She and Andy lived at Sunset Bay in Charleston for a time, until resettling in Coquille in 1945.  She was a member of the Coquille Senior Center.

     Survivors include her daughters, Merle Haney of North Bend, Helen Cardwell of Coos Bay; grandchildren, James Bush of North Bend, Kathleen Bowen of Coos Bay, and Jon "Mike" Haney of Aloha.

      The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Coquille Senior Center Memorial Fund.

     Arrangements are under the direction of Amling/Schroeder Funeral Service in Coquille.

      A Clark County resident for most of her life, Kate Alcenia Thankful Edmonds Carr died Sunday (August 13, 1967) at the age of 76.

      She was a past Democratic committee woman for Clark county, and was a member of the League of Women Voters, Women's Auxiliary, and the Teamsters
Union.

      Mrs. Carr had lived at 3615 W Street at the time of her death. She was born in Ridgefield on August 11, 1891.  

Survivors are a son, Donald Y., Vancouver; five daughters, Mrs. John Maska, Los Angeles, CA, Mrs. Gerald Marrs, Vancouver, Mrs. Norman Marrs and Mrs. Dale Mapes, both of Portland, and Mrs. Lloyd Frank, Shawnee, KS; a sister, Miss Alverda Edmonds, Vancouver; and 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.    

      Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel.  Interment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Kelso, WA.

      Albert Marion Edmonds, 69, died at his home near Ridgefield yesterday (January 14, 1937), following several years of failing health. A native of Junction City, KS, he came to Clark County in 1877, settling near Ridgefield, and was married there October 22, 1890, to Miss Elmina Soden.

     Besides the widow, Mrs. Elmina Soden Edmonds of Ridgefield, survivors include two sons, George E. Edmonds and Ralph M. Edmonds, at home; three daughters, Mrs. (Thankful) E. L. Carr of Vancouver, Mrs. (Ella) C. A. Wetherell of Arlington, OR, and Miss Alverda Edmonds of Olympia; sixteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three brothers, E. E. Edmonds and A. B. Edmonds of Vancouver and F. H. Edmonds of Ridgefield; and two sisters, Mrs. Sylvania Brice and Mrs. Lillian Bennett of Ridgefield.

     The Rev. C. B. Latimer of Ridgefield will officiate at funeral services to be held in Knapp's chapel Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Interment will follow in the IOOF cemetery at Ridgefield.

MATHYS RITES ARE TOMORROW

   Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel for Frederick Mathys, 35 year resident of Clark county. The services, with Reverend C.V. Bryson officiating, will be conducted by the Spanish American War Veterans of John Barlow camp No. 6.

   Mathys, a 34 year resident of Van-couver before he moved to Ridgefield last year, was born in Bern, Switzerland Feb 7, 1869. He came to the United States at the age of 16 and was naturalized in Vancouver in the Court of Judge A.L. Miller. In Ridgefield his address as 124 South Third St.

   Mathys, who served more than 25 years in the U.S. Army, is survived by one son, Lt. Commander Harry Mathys, serving in the U.S. Navy in Newfoundland, and three grandchildren: Leonard Mathys of Los Angeles, Kenneth Mathys of Vancouver and Mrs. Patricia Bauer of Ridgefield.

   Final interment for the 81 year old Mathys will be at the Park Hill cemetery

   A resident of Clark County since 1886, Sarah S. Mathys died Wednesday at Retsil, Wash. at the age of 85.

   Mrs. Mathys was born May 23, 1883 at Valley Center, Kan., and lived in Vancouver at 8917 NE 25 Avenue.

   She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, W.C.T.U. and the Margaret Woolf Auxiliary of Spanish American War Veterans.

   Survivors are a son, Harry Mathys of Lakeview, Ark., three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great- granddaughter.

   Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 am at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gordon Mumford officiating.  Interment will be in Park Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Katy McKee, 28, VANCOUVER, WA.

     Mrs. Katy Beatrice McKee, 28, of 404 W. Fourteenth St., died early this morning at the Clark General hospital where she had been undergoing treatment for the past three weeks. Born January 2, 1906, at Fort Brady, Mich., Mrs. McKee came to Vancouver with her parents at the age of two years and had since made her home here. She was a member of the local Presbyterian church.

     Besides her husband, Archie L. (Roy) McKee, survivors include two sons, Leonard LeRoy and Kenneth, both at home; one daughter, Alice Patricia, at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Mathys, of Vancouver, and two brothers, Harry Mathys of Vancouver and Edwin Mathys of New London, Conn.

     Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock in Hamilton's chapel with interment in the Park Hill Cemetery.

     Funeral services for Mrs. Katey (Katy) McKee, who died Monday, were held this afternoon at 1 o'clock in Hamilton's chapel with the Rev. J. H. Wortman of Salem, formerly of the United Brethren Church here, officiating.

For the services, Miss Olga Stolee sang "Beautiful Isle" and "Face to Face" accompanied on the harp by Mrs. R. E. Du Fresne, who also played the harp solo "Rock of Ages".

Pallbearers included Marion Lovette, Arthur Pope, A. L. Bemis, Lloyd Howard, Arlo Hefferen and Owen Petticord, and vault entombment followed in Park Hill cemetery.

BLAST FATAL--

   Killed in a ship explosion in the Portland, Maine, harbor, was Edwin F. Mathys, chief MM. He had been in the navy since enlisting in 1922, and was a member of the 65-man crew of which only 14 survived the blast.

        (Edwin F. Mathys,  grandson of Thomas & Kate Soden.  Records later show he actually died April 23, 1945 when the boat was sunk "due to Captain's error."  He had been a submarine man his entire career when he had a choice of being on this small boat or an aircraft carrier. PMB)

FOUR MORE ON CASUALTY ROLL

     The names of three more Clark county men were contained in today's casualty list from the Office of War Information and one casualty was reported by relatives. In the OWI release are two wounded and one missing.

     Edwin F. Mathys , Chief MM USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mathys, 300 W. Forty-second street, was recently killed when the ship on which he was stationed exploded in the Portland, Maine harbor, it was announced by his relatives today.

     Mathys enlisted in the navy in 1922, it was reported. News of the explosion declared that of the complement of 65 men, only 14 survivors were listed.

Roscoe Anderson, 65, Coquille

     COQUILLE - Roscoe "Andy" C. Anderson, 65, late resident of 350 S. Adams, died Thursday Jan. 30, 1969, at his home. Born June 20, 1903, in Lake Preston, SD, Mr. Anderson had been a resident of Coos County since 1922 and of Coquille since 1945. He was a retired mechanic.

     Survivors include the widow, Katie; daughters, Mrs. Helen Bush of North Bend and Mrs. Merle Haney of Coquille; and three grandchildren.

     The Rev. Robert McNabb, Pioneer United Methodist Church, will officiate at the service Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. in the Coquille Chapel. Interment will be in Ocean View Memory Gardens.

Death Probed By Sheriff's Office

      Humboldt sheriff's officers today are investigating a possible murder which occurred Sunday at Petrolia in the southwestern part of the county.

       In the Petrolia shooting, Robert Westley Rackliff, 816 Second St., Eureka, was booked at the county jail on a murder charge following the discovery of his estranged wife's body.

     Victim in the Petrolia incident is Mrs. Frances Rackliff, 25, of 4153 E Street, Eureka. The sheriff's office reported she was shot through the midsection with a derringer pistol, while seated at the wheel of a car. A telephone report of the murder came from Petrolia to Eureka at 6:40 a.m. Sunday. Rackliff was returned to Eureka by resident deputy A. A. Ekhardt.  Both door windows of the car were broken, for unknown reason.   Mrs. Rackliff had been a waitress at a Eureka restaurant.   Rackliff was arraigned this morning before judge Robert N. Conners in Eureka Municipal Court. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 18 at 1:30 p.m.   Rackliff was remanded to custody of the sheriff's department without bail.

   A Mass of Christian Burial for Helen Carr Maska of Gresham will be said at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's Catholic Church, Vancouver, WA.

   Mrs. Maska died Friday, November 13, 1992, in a Portland-area care center of complications related to a stroke. She was 81.

   She was born in St. Louis on June 30, 1911. She lived in Vancouver from 1967 to 1988 and had lived in Oregon since then. She married John James Maska in 1930 in Portland. Her maiden name was Carr.

She was an insurance underwriter for 15 years. While she lived in Washington state, she was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.

   She is survived by her sons, James B. of Gresham, Ronald K. of Rancho Santa Maria, CA , and Richard D. of Los Angeles; sisters, Ivy Marrs of Portland, Pat Carr of Port Angeles, WA, Mabel Marrs of Vancouver, WA and Doris Mapes of Fall City, WA; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

     John James Maska of Gresham, OR, died of lung disease Monday, August 27, 1991 in a Gresham care center. He was 86.

     A memorial service will be at 10 am Friday in St. John's Catholic Church in Vancouver, WA. Interment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery.

     He was born December 25, 1904, in Hays, KS. Mr. Maska lived in southern California for a number of years and was employed as a grip in the movie industry. He worked for Desilu Studios before retiring and moving to the Portland area in 1967.

     Survivors include his wife, Helen; sons, James B. of Gresham, Ronald K. of Mission Viejo, CA and Richard D. of Los Angeles; sister Phyllis Hoff of Portland; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mabel Vivian Carr Marrs, 81, Vancouver, wa.

   Mabel Marrs, 81, died Tuesday, July 26, 1994, in Vancouver of complications from a stroke. . Born June 27, 1913, in Ridgefield, WA, she later moved with her family to St. Louis, MO, where she worked as a secretary, attended Washington University and received an A.A. in social work.

    In 1945, Mrs. Marrs moved with her husband, Gerald, to Vancouver and worked for the V.A. Hospital, the U.S. Air Force, the Red Cross, and the Women's International Bowling Congress.

   An avid bowler, Mrs. Marrs was president of the Oregon State Women's Bowling Association for 25 years, president of the 600000 Club and a vice president of the Women's International Bowling congress. In 1979, she was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame in St. Louis for meritorious service.  She also loved softball, swimming, pool, camping, cards, traveling and music.   

        Mrs. Marrs is preceded in death by her son, Gerald Marrs Jr. Survivors include her husband, Gerald, at home; her daughter, Marlinda Stearns of Salem, OR; three sisters, Ivy Marrs of Portland, Doris Jarchow of Falls City, WA; Patricia Carr of Sequim, WA and three grandchildren.    A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

   Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bowling Hall of Fame.

  OLYMPIA - Former Vancouver resident Erma Viola Edmonds, 82, died of osteoporosis in an Olympia nursing home Monday, May 28, 1984.

      Mrs. Edmonds, a homemaker, had lived in Vancouver for 20 years and in Ridgefield for a time.

      Survivors include one daughter, Luella Buel of Olympia; one sister, Grace Edmonds of Port Orford, OR.; six brothers, Warner Hampton of Gates, OR., Harry  Hampton of Beaverton, OR and Glen Hampton, Elmer Hampton, Leslie Hampton and Albert Hampton, all of Salem, OR; and two grandchildren.

     A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Young's Funeral Home in Tigard, OR, with burial in Ridgefield Cemetery. The casket will be open until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

     Funeral services for Thomas W. Soden, 91, former resident of Clark County who died at the Washington State Veterans' Home at Retsil, WA, on Monday, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Retsil.

     Soden, a former logger, was born Aug. 6, 1872, in the Midwest, and came to Clark County with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Soden, in 1888.

      Soden served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. He lived at Ridgefield, Pioneer and Vancouver, and at the time he moved to the Veterans' home about 10 years ago he resided in the Ridgefield area.

      Survivors  include a son Paul, and a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Varney, both of Coquille, OR, and one grandchild.

     GRESHAM, OR - Helen Carr Maska, a Vancouver resident from 1967 to 1988, died of complications related to a stroke Friday, Nov. 13, 1992, in a Portland care center. She was 81.

     Mrs. Maska was born June 30, 1911, in St. Louis, MO. She had been an insurance underwriter for 15 years and an Oregon resident since 1988. Mrs. Maska was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Vancouver. She enjoyed painting, crocheting, baking, history, astrology and horticulture.

     Survivors include three sons, James of Gresham, Ronald of Rancho Santa Maria, CA and Richard of Los Angeles; three sisters, Ivy Marrs of Portland, Pat Carr of Port Angeles, WA and Mabel Marrs of Vancouver; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

     A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Sunnyside Chimes Memorial Garden in Portland is in charge of arrangements.

     A native of Wisconsin, Benjamin L. Soden, of 1916 D Street, died here Sunday at the age of 93. He had made his home in Vancouver since 1903.

     Soden was born April 7, 1867, in Wisconsin. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Soden Downs and Mabel Soden, both of Vancouver; a brother T.W.  Soden, Retsil, WA; three sisters, Mrs. Elmer Crosby of Ridgefield, Mrs. Sylvia Horn of Vancouver and Mrs. Sarah Mathys of Retsil, WA and a granddaughter.

     Death came Thursday at Ridgefield for Maude Katy Crosby, who had made her home in Clark County for 71 of her 90 years. She was born June 17, 1871, in Wisconsin, and had made her home 118 S. Fifth Street in Ridgefield.

     Survivors include the widower, Elmer Crosby, at home; son, Guy Dittmer of Coos Bay, OR; daughters Edith Droste, Eugene, OR, Katy Anderson, Coquille, OR, Belle Lamerding, San Diego, CA and Hazel Morris, Rockaway, OR; brother Tom Soden, Retsil, WA; a sister, Sarah Mathys, Retsil and three step-children.

     She was a member of the Ridgefield Methodist Church and the Ridgefield Pythian Sisters Lodge.

     Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Walter P. Elkins officiating. Interment will be in the East Pioneer cemetery, Ridgefield, WA. Vancouver Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

     Albert Marion Edmonds, 69, died at his home near Ridgefield yesterday afternoon, January 14, 1937, following several years of failing health. A native of Junction City, KS, he came to Clark county in 1877, settling near Ridgefield, and was married there October 22, 1890, to Miss Elmina Soden.

     Besides the widow, Mrs. Elmina Soden Edmonds of Ridgefield, survivors include two sons, George F. Edmonds, at home; three daughters, Mrs. E. L. (Thankful) Carr of Vancouver, Mrs. C. A. (Ella) Wetherell of Arlington, OR and Miss Alverda Edmonds of Olympia; sixteen grandchildren, two great-grand-children; three brothers, E. E. Edmonds and A. B. Edmonds of Vancouver and F. H. Edmonds of Ridgefield and two sisters, Mrs. Sylvania Brice and Mrs. Lillian Bennett of Ridgefield.

     The Rev. C. B. Latimer of Ridgefield will officiate at funeral services to be held in Knapp's chapel Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Interment will follow in the IOOF cemetery at Ridgefield.

     RIDGEFIELD, WA - A graveside funeral for Clara M. Bales, a Ridgefield resident for 40 years, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ridgefield Cemetery, with Eugene Arthur officiating.

      She died Friday, June 4, 1982 in Camas. She was 81. She was born August 1, 1900, in Sauvie Island, OR. She last resided at 26601 NW 31 Avenue, Ridgefield, WA. She had been a housekeeper and maid for Thunderbird motor inns. She was a Jehovah's Witness.

     Survivors include a son, Ernest "Bill" of Hazel Dell; three daughters, Sylvia Russell of Camas, Amelia Fleming of St. Helens, OR, and Mary Krueger of Beaverton, OR; a brother, Ernest Horn of Manteca, CA; a sister, Cora Baker of Retsil, WA; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

   Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday for Ralph M. Edmonds, 51, long-time Clark County resident residing in Copalis Crossing, Wash., at the time of his death. He died Thursday November 19, 1959 in Carlisle, Wash.  

   He had lived in this area all of his life prior to moving to Copalis Crossing in 1951. He was born February 17, 1908, in Ridgefield.   

   Edmonds was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Aberdeen. He was a member of the Shingle Weavers Union.   

   Services will be at Knapp's Funeral Service in Vancouver with Dr. Herbert J. Doran officiating. Vault interment will be in the Ridgefield IOOF Cemetery.   

   Survivors include the widow, Erma; a daughter, Miss Louella Edmonds, Copalis Crossing; a brother, George Edmonds, Umatilla, Ore.; and three sisters, Mrs. Kate Carr, Vancouver, Mrs. Charles Wetherell, Hermiston, Ore., and Miss Alverda Edmonds, Vancouver.

   Eugene Merrill Dittmer, aged 59 years, died this morning at the family home
at Pioneer. He was born in Michigan in 1862. The family moved to the Pioneer district from Kansas 35 years ago.

   Funeral services will be held at the family home at Pioneer tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Pioneer cemetery. The body will be at the Limber undertaking parlors until time for the funeral services.

   Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Maude (Soden) Dittmer; four daughters, Mrs. Edith Droste of Portland, Mrs. Hazel Morris and Miss Kate Dittmer, at home, and Mrs. Belle Perry at Ridgefield; and one son, Guy Dittmer of Ridgefield.

   A member of First Christian Church, Emilie Pauline Downs, 81, died September 23, 1994, at a local nursing home. She was born February 8, 1913 in Vancouver, and had lived in Vancouver her entire life.

   A homemaker, she belonged to the Independent Order of Foresters, Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Clark County Humane Society and the American Association of Retired Persons.

   A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, followed by burial in Park Hill Cemetery. Vancouver Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

CURTIS SODEN, 80, CHICO, CA.

     A memorial service for Curtis Victor Soden, 80, of Chico, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Brusie Funeral Home.

     He died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1994, at a local convalescent hospital.

     Soden was born Aug. 25, 1914, in Pioneer, Wash., to Rock and Dawn  Soden.  He attended many schools in various towns before graduating from Redding High School in 1937.

   He served as a radio technician during World War II and in the Korean War. In 1939 he married Marion Harris in Reno, Nev. Later Soden worked for the California Water Service for a short time before beginning work for PG&E, retiring after 33 years. Soden moved to Chico in 1946.

     He was a member of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church. He loved flowers, travel, camping and spending time at his cabin in Butte Meadows.

      Survivors include his wife, Marion Lenor of Chico; a son, Victor Harris Soden of Parker, Ariz.; a brother Joe Rollo Soden of Olympia, Wash.; two sisters, Milly McNeill and Thalia Peck, both of Oregon, two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

     Memorial contributions may be made to Enloe Hospice or the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church in care of the funeral home, which is handling arrangements.

     A resident of Vancouver for 30 years, Carr lived at 3615 W Street and was born March 11, 1927 in St. Louis, MO. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 501 and was employed at the Del Monte Cannery.

     Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jack Harvey of Portland; and five sisters, Mrs. Mabel Marrs of Vancouver, Mrs. Ivy Marrs of Portland, Mrs. Pat Frank of Shawnee Mission, KS, Mrs. Doris Mapes of Kansas City, MO and Mrs. Helen Maska of Los Angeles.

     Former Vancouver resident, Harry Edson Mathys, 82, died Monday, Aug. 18, 19997, at home in Florida. He last resided at 206 Sea Pines Lane, Route 2 Gulf Aire, Port St. Joe, FL.

      Mr. Mathys was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Vancouver and graduated from Vancouver High School in 1933. A Navy veteran of World War II, he retired as a commander after 23 years in the military. Mr. Mathys made his home in Arkansas and Florida after he retired from the service.

     Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Irma Schmitt Mathys, at home; and a brother, Kenneth J. of Vancouver.

      There will be a memorial service in Florida. His body will be cremated.

LEONARD L. MATHYS, 64, COTATI, CA.

     Leonard Leroy Mathys, age 64. died of cancer June 6, 1990, at his home, 8491 Lakewood, Cotati, CA. Born and raised in Vancouver, WA. Born Leonard L. Shelton, he assumed the name of his maternal grandparents (Mathys) when they adopted him upon the death of his mother, Katy Mathys Shelton McKee, in 1934.

      He was employed in various phases of the electronic industry many years and retired from National Semiconductor about three years ago.

     Survivors are: his widow, Donnie, at home; son, Lamont, Long Beach, CA; daughters, Kathleen Daly, Tustin, CA and Sue Mathys and Shauna Olea, both of Cerritos, CA; three stepchildren, three grandchildren, and two great grand-children; a brother, Kenneth J. Mathys, Vancouver; half-sister, Patricia (McKee) Bauer, Vancouver; half-brother, James Grant, Tacoma, WA and an uncle (and legal brother by adoption), Harry Mathys, of Florida.

     Leonard was a 1943 graduate of Vancouver High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and afterward lived and worked in California.

     The funeral will be Saturday, June 9, 3:00 p.m. at Cyprus Hill Memorial Park, Petaluma, CA. A memorial service will be held Saturday evening at St. Johns United Methodist Church, Rohnert Park, CA, where he was a member.

     In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in his name be given to St. Johns United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1726, Rohnert Park, CA 94928, or to Hospice of Sonoma County, Santa Rosa, CA.
