The following information was taken from Matthias' military records.
John and Hannah lived in Jefferson, Northfield, Hartsgrove and Brunswick, Ohio. They are both buried at Geneva, Ashtabula County, Ohio cemetery. From military records of Matthias Soden, John and Hannah lived on a farm for 10 years in Hartsgrove, Ashtabula County, Ohio which was owned by Mark Soden and William Soden. Hannah was a housewife and John worked on a farm for a Mr. Bostwick and also worked for a Mr. Bracy for 50 cents a day. Matthias' military records show that John's health (poor heart and old age) had been failing up to the death of his son (Matthias) and since then very fast. In August of 1870, John was scarcely able to do any work and had nearly lost his mind. The other children contributed to John and Hannah's support, but very little until the death of Matthias, when their contribution amounted to $25.00 a year.
Matthias lived at home prior to joining the service and worked at farming for Mr. Bracey of Hartsgrove and for Mr. North of Louisburg and earned $15.00 to $20.00 per month in which he paid rent, bought food, fuel and clothing for his parents. He also exchanged work for cattle which he took home to his parents. When Matthias joined the service, he was paid $80.00 which he gave to his parents. He then sent home $8.00 per month for his parents living expense. After Matthias' death, John and Hannah were granted a pension of $8.00 per month from the government.
Matthias' military records indicated that Hannah was unable to write as she used an "X" for her signature. There was no mention if John could write and no mention if they could read.Semi-Weekly Ashtabula Sentential, Saturday, September 23, 1882 recorded the following death notice:
In Brunswick, Medina County, Ohio, September 6th of heart disease, John Soden, aged 79 years. He formerly lived in Hartsgrove.
