Benton County News Friday 13 Mar 1925:
VETERAN SHELLSBURG RACING MAN DEAD
Shellsburg: March 13 Morgan Sheeley, well known in horse racing circles, was
found dead Wednesday after an evening meal which he had helped prepare.
Mr. Sheeley was 83 years of age and had been a familiar figure on Shellsburg
streets for many years. The pioneer had invited an old friend. Henry Soden,
nearly his own age, to dine with him in the absence of Mrs. Sheeley who was
visiting. They decided to bake some biscuits, a few of the kind they had
liked so well as boys.
After eating heartily, and telling stories of olden times, Mr. Sheeley
decided to take a nap. He was found dead several hours later.
Mr. Sheeley was a number of years in the race horse game with G.K. Barton.
He was known as a man who never welched or quit on the equestrian circuit.
For a number of years, he was in business at Fort Dodge. The past few years
he has been afflicted with dropsy and heart trouble. He is survived by a
wife and five children. They are: Mrs. Margaret Isaacson of Fort Dodge, Mrs.
Mattie Ryan, Jewett; Essie Addler, Pensacola; Emma Lee, Webster City' Anna
Bailey, Webster City. Bert Sheeley, nephew of Shellsburg also survives.
Mr. Sheeley was married three times during his life. Two years ago, he was
united in marriage to Lillian Barta-Richland of Cedar Rapids.
