HELEN M. SODEN, AGE 79, OLD BRIDGE

Helen M. Donnelly Soden died Friday, Feb. 25, at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge. She was 79.

Born in Jamesburg, she lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., Plainfield, and Bernardsville before moving to Old Bridge 21 years ago.

Prior to her retirement in 1973, she was a bookkeeper for Summit and Elizabeth Trust Co., Summit, for five years.

Mrs. Soden was a graduate of Drake Business College, New Brunswick. She was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, and was active in needlework crafts. She was a member of the Middlesex and Monmouth Friendship Association, and was a former member of the Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge Auxiliary, having volunteered more than 5,500 hours at the hospital.

She was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Womens Air Corps. She was stationed in Colorado Springs, where she met her husband, the late Frank M. Soden, a ski trooper with the Tenth Mountain Division.

A member of Simpson United Methodist Church, Old Bridge, she was a Sunday School teacher and trainer for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank M., in 1995.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn W. and Susan C. Soden of Bexley, Ohio; a daughter, Linda C. Soden of Bound Brook; a sister, Carol Reda of Staten Island, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Britt and Blair Soden, and Melanie, Michael, and Matthew Pulaski.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 29, at 10 a.m. in Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Burial will follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Simpson United Methodist Church, Rte. 516 and Owens Road, Old Bridge, NJ 08857, or to Raritan Bay Medical Center, Ferry Road and Rte. 18, Old Bridge, NJ 08857.

ALLISON JILL SODEN, 35, of COLTS NECK, died Tuesday at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. She was a sales representative for Kraft Foods, Edison, leaving in 1995. Prior to that, she worked in the fine jewelry department at Macy's, Monmouth Mall, Eatontown. She attended Brookdale Community College and was a 1986 graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in business and finance. Born in Neptune, she lived in Colts Neck for 30 years.

Surviving are her parents, Ellen and Robert Soden of Colts Neck; and a sister, Sandra Ellen.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. to-day at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26. S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, the Rev. Scott Brown, Colts Neck Reformed Church, officiating. Interment will be in Van Liew Cemetery, North Brunswick. Donations may be made to Lunch Break Inc., P.O. Box 2215, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

THEODORE W. "BUDDY" SODEN, 75, of Palm Bay, Fla., formerly of LITTLE SILVER, died Dec. 2 at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla. He was a retired driver for the Transportation Department at Fort Monmouth, and a part-time security guard at Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport, for more than 20 years. He was a World War II Air Force veteran, a member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 29, Fort Monmouth, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the American Legion Post 117, Palm Bay. He attended Long Branch High School. Born in Long Branch, he lived there, in Fair Haven and in Little Silver before moving to Palm Bay in 1991.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Soden; three sons, Kevin Soden of Melbourne, Fla., Michael Soden of Little Silver, and Theodore Soden Jr. of Sea Bright; a daughter, Colleen Soden of Eatontown; a sister, Lois Squillante of West Long Branch; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date, to be announced in New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home, Melbourne, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

BERTHA J. SODEN, AGE 80, SPOTSWOOD

Bertha J. Chitren Soden died Friday at home. She was 80.

She was a lifelong resident of Spotswood.

She retired in 1984 after 38 years as a machine operator for the Peter Schweitzer division of Kimberly Clark, Spotswood.

She was a member of the Jamesburg/Monroe Senior Citizens and a past vice president and president of the Spotswood Senior Citizens.

She was a past secretary and member of the Spotswood Polish American Club. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4589, Spotswood.

She was an avid gardener.

She was a communicant of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Spotswood.

Surviving are her husband, William C. Sr.; a son, William Jr. of Florham Park; two daughters, Bertha Olsen of Whitehall, Pa., and Jean Temperini of Monroe; a brother, Albert Chitren of Spotswood; a sister, Violet Buchter of New Milford; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 36 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, followed by a 10:15 a.m. Mass at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Monroe.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spotswood First Aid Squad, DeVoe Avenue, Spotswood, or to the American Heart Association, 2550 Route 1, North Brunswick.

MILDRED L. SODEN, of Fairmont, W. Va., formerly of FREEHOLD, died Saturday at the Wishing Well Manor, Fairmont. She was a homemaker. She was a Methodist by faith. She was born in Toms River.

Her husband, J. Wright Soden, died in 1996. She was also predeceased by her parents, John W. and Emma C. Fielder Lewis. Surviving are a son, Jeffrey W. of Bridgeport, W. Va.; a grandson, Philip W. Soden of Bridgeport; a granddaughter, Christy S. Hoffman of Red Bank; a sister, Gertrude L. Frazee of Point Pleasant Beach; and three nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a time and date to be announced by the Freeman Funeral Home, 47 E. Main St., Freehold.

WILLA M. SODEN REID, AGE 84, JAMESBURG

Willa M. Soden Reid died Tuesday at Hamilton Continuing Care Nursing Home, Hamilton. She was 84.

She was born in Helmetta and lived in Jamesburg for most of her life.

She worked as a clerk at Kaye Septak's Custom Paint and Decorating Center, Jamesburg. She previously had worked for Jamesburg Pharmacy and Jamesburg Liquor.

Her husband, Clemeth, died in 1973.

Surviving are a son, Robert B. of West Windsor; a daughter, Sandra Henry of Westfield; a sister, Alyce Reynolds of Jamesburg, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Lester Memorial Home, 16 W. Church St., Jamesburg. Burial will be at Fernwood Cemetery in Jamesburg.

JEAN E. CHANDLER SODEN, 71, a lifelong resident of FAIR HAVEN, died Monday at Leigh Memorial Hospital, Norfolk, Va. She was an inventory management specialist at Fort Monmouth, Eatontown. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, the Fair Haven Senior Citizens and the Federal Employees Retirement Association.

Her husband, Louis, died in 1995; and she was predeceased by her parents, George and Ethel Chandler. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Louis C. Jiannine Sr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, Warren and George Chandler, both of Fair Haven; two sisters, Helen Godard and Elizabeth McDaniel, both of Lincroft, Middletown; a grandson, Louis C. Jiannine Jr.; and a granddaughter, Kristi Lynn Jiannine.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.

ANNA J. SODEN WEST, 90, of FREEHOLD, died yesterday at The Manor, Freehold Township. She was a homemaker, a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, and a member of its Altar-Rosary Society. She was also a member of Court St. Rose of Lima 737, Catholic Daughters of America, Freehold. Born in Freehold Township, she lived in the Freehold area all of her life.

Her husband, John J. Sr., died in 1971. Surviving are one son, John J. Jr., Freehold; one brother, Arthur Soden Sr., Jackson; two grandchildren, Beth Ann Locandro, Marietta, Ga., and John P. West, Lanoka Harbor; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Nicole and Christopher Locandro, Marietta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Freeman Funeral Home, 47 E. Main St., Freehold. The Rite of Committal will be celebrated Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by a funeral liturgy at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, at a time to be announced. Her husband, John D., died in 1984. Surviving are a son, John H., Newtown Square, Pa.; two daughters, Alice M.J. Weber, Lancaster, with whom she resided, and Lorelei Gibson, Las Vegas; a sister, Edna Shepard, New Providence; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held at Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center St., Freehold, on from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with interment to follow at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent.

KATHLEEN V. O'ROURKE SODEN, 82, of MIDDLETOWN, died Friday at home. She was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, Middletown. She was a member of the Bayshore Council of the Knights of Columbus Columbiettes No. 2858, Keansburg, and a member of the Tomaso Plaza Senior Citizens. Born in Werford, County Cork, Ireland, she moved to the United States in 1922, settling in Philadelphia. She lived in Brooklyn before moving to Middletown in 1952.

Her husband, John P., died in 1990. Surviving are a son, Jack (John), Brielle; two daughters, Joan Mayfield, Canyon Lake, Texas, and Rita Soden Mullady, Keyport; a brother, Edward Dugan, Brooklyn; a sister, Rita Mitchell, Howell; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a lifetime friend, Evelyn Wilton, Port Monmouth.

Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine's Church, Middletown. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey Hospice, 141 Bodman Place, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

MEILZINER E. BRIMMER SODEN, 81, of Wanamassa, OCEAN TOWNSHIP, died Sunday at home. She was a nurse's assistant at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, for many years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of the Wayside Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, the Rumson Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Democratic Committee of Rumson. She was a World War II Army veteran. Mrs. Soden was born in Norfolk, Va., and lived in Fair Haven and Rumson before moving to Wanamassa three years ago.

Her husband, Henry E., died in 1977, and her sons, Melvin, in 1978, and Lee E., in 1995. Surviving are two sons, Henry E. Jr., Wanamassa, and Walter W., Middletown Township; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements.

EDITH KUNSELMAN SODEN, 74, of JACKSON TOWNSHIP, died Wednesday at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. She was a sewing machine operator for 58 years, and was last employed at Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, for eight years. She was a member of the Englishtown First Aid Squad Ladies Auxiliary, and the State Ladies Auxiliary, known as the Gold Cross. She was a member of Immanuel Bible Church, Howell Township. Born in Brookville, Pa., she lived in Englishtown, moving to Jackson 12 years ago.

Surviving are three nephews, Ronald Boyce, Marlboro Township, and John and Robert Boyce, both of Fort White, Fla.; and several great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. George S. Hassler Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge of arrangements.

Martha Soden Headley, age 96, a former resident of Walnut Ridge, died January 18, 1997, at her home in Waterloo, Ala.

    Born in Hardy, she lived in the Walnut Ridge area most of her lifetime, but had lived in Mississippi and Alabama the past 12 years.  Her husband, Charlie Headley, preceded her in death.

    Survivors include two daughters,  Virginia Jones, Waterloo, Ala., and Paulene Hicks, Bay;  a brother, Orb Soden, Anderson, Ind.;  22 grandchildren,  42 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.

    Funeral was Monday morning at 10:00 in the House-Gregg Chapel with Rev. Allen Jones officiating.  Burial was in the Dowell Chapel Cemetery, near Tuckerman,  under direction of the House-Gregg Funeral Home.  

    Pallbearer were Jimmy Liles,  John Trawick,  Ross Flinn,  John Stalnaker,  Jason Middleton,  and Earnie Liles.

CULLER (SODEN) Adelaide Dute Culler, age 84, Wednesday, December 15, 1999 in Columbus. Born July 29, 1915 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Formerly employed by Jameson Hospital, Admissions, Dr. George Cunningham, Medical Secretary, Bill Fray Chevrolet Garage, Cost Accounting Department and Dr. Anthony J. Elisco, D.O., Medical Secretary from where she retired. Member of Second United Presbyterian Church where she was a Deacon and on the committee for the nursery. Adelaide was a clown with the Keystone Clowns Alley #125 for 5 years after retirement. Preceded in death by parents Frank Marshall and Nettie Scott Dute, husband Kenneth Culler. Survived by son, Richard (Barbara) Culler of Blairsville, Pa.; daughter, Susan (Glenn) Soden of Columbus, Oh.; grandchildren, Brittany Soden, Joe Culler and Blair Soden; many nieces and nephews. Marian F. Skelly

DELHI — Marian F. Skelly, 98, of Delhi and formerly of Sidney, passed away Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at Countryside Care Facility, Delhi.

She was born to the late George A. and Frances Tiffany Stilson on Nov. 7, 1900, in Unadilla.

Marian married James Skelly on June 4, 1931, in Scanton, Pa. He predeceased her on Sept. 26, 1972.

Marian was a member of the Bridge Club and the first Congregational Church in Sidney. She also resided in Johnson City for a short time.

Marian is survived by nephews, Richard and Peggy Stilson of Sidney and John and Nancy Meek of Greenwich; nieces, Frances and William Brizzee of Almagordo, N.M., and Darlene and Howard Stilson of Mount Upton; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Clifford and Lynn Stilson; and two sisters, Shirley Meek and Maude Soden.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Mr. Gary Stilson, a great-nephew, will officiate.

Friends may call Tuesday, Aug. 10, the family will be in attendance from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Frank S. Scerbo, Jr., 66, of East Stroudsburg, died on Sunday at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Shirley (Smith) Scerbo, at home. They had been married for 40 years.

He was born in Jersey City, N.J., a son of the late Frank S. and Jennie (Oliva) Scerbo, Sr. He had been a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in East Stroudsburg.

He, along with his son, was a building contractor and owned Frank Scerbo & Son Building Contractors of East Stroudsburg for 37 years. He was a member of Monroe Pike Builders Association. He was a graduate of Dickison High School in Jersey City, N.J.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Frank S. Scerbo, III, and Michael A. Scerbo, Sr., both of East Stroudsburg; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer Scerbo, Frank S. Scerbo, IV, Michael A. Scerbo, Jr., all of East Stroudsburg; 5 sisters, Beatrice Calamito, Elsie Calamito, Anna Yakamovich, all of Jersey City, N.J., and Eleanor Spano and Jennie Bolles, both of East Stroudsburg; 6 brothers, Constantino Scerbo of Hoboken, N.J., Anthony Scerbo and Vincent Scerbo, both of Jersey City, N.J., William and Joseph Scerbo, both of East Stroudsburg, and Alfred Scerbo of Seagirt, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Soden.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 9 a.m. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg with Father Thomas Sokolowski as the celebrant.

Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg. Interment will be in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.

Franklin J. Schaad Jr.
MILDRED — Franklin J. Schaad Jr., 76, of Jackson Street, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and a part time resident of Largo, Fla. He and his wife, the former Marcella Steafather Schaad, observed their 48th wedding anniversary June 23. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a scout in the 88th Cavalry Recon 8th Armored Division Troop B, and served in the Rhineland Ardennes Central Europe where he received the bronze star medal, European African and Middle Eastern Campaign medal with three bronze stars and the good conduct medal. He was a member of McDermott Post 452 American Legion, Mildred, the A.J. Bird Post 384, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Overton, the Eighth Armored Division Association, White Ash Land Association and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a former member of the Dushore Lions Club, the Mildred Fire Company and Ambulance Association and the Elks Lodge in Towanda. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. Born here Dec. 18, 1923, he was a son of Franklin and Edna Thayer Schaad. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Daniel of Mildred; a daughter, Susan Soden of Columbia; a sister, Dolores Beauchamp of Adelphia, Md.; and five grandchildren, Vincent and Justin Soden and Danielle, Corey and Kyle. He was preceded in death by a brother, William. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Michael Harris officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call at McHenry’s, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A Legion service will be at 7:30 and a vigil will follow at 8:30. A prayer service will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

LeRoy Kenneth Johnson, 76, of Ellsworth died Sunday, March 28, at River Falls Area Hospital.

The son of Emil and Minnie (Lind) Johnson, he was born Nov. 6, 1922 in Trenton Township, Pierce County.

He married Verneal Ekstrom Nov. 28, 1942 in Red Wing, Minn. They were married 56 years.

Mr. Johnson worked in the shipyard in Savage, Minn., during World War II until 1946. Then he went to work for the Pierce County Highway Department. He retired in 1984.

While hobby farming in the town of Trenton, he enjoyed gardening and tinkering with his John Deere tractors. His family said he also enjoyed being called "Grandpa" by all the neighbor kids, Sunday drives, picnics and old time music. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife; 11 children and their spouses: DeLoris "Dodee" and Lorin Bloomstand of Ellsworth, Dennis and Kathy Johnson of San Jose, Calif., Ronny and Pam Johnson of Ellsworth. Linnea "Tudy" and Robert Soden of Ellsworth, Janice Alms and Bill Kearns of Ellsworth, Jerome and Loni Johnson of Ellsworth, Karol and Nolan Kenall of Ellsworth, Brenda and Jim Dougherty of Ellsworth, Marlyce "Myo" and Mark Bayer, Ellsworth, Lisa and Dennis Boettcher of Ellsworth and Linden Johnson of Ellsworth; 22 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Survivors also include two brothers and sisters-in-law: Eldon and Verona Johnson of Hager City and Roydie and Dorothy Johnson of Ellsworth; and one sister-in-law: Stella Johnson of Ellsworth.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Melvin.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Carol Peterson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, and at the church for an hour before the funeral.

      Americo "Joe" Rosena, 72, died Sunday.
      He was born May 31, 1927, in Jersey City, N.J. A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, he was a retired assistant director in state government and an eight-year resident of North Las Vegas.
      He is survived by his daughters, Virginia Floyd of Las Vegas, Grace Erney of Ewing, N.J., and Marie Soden of Chesterfield, N.J.; son, Americo II of Hamilton, N.J.; brother, Albert of Granada Hills, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren.
      Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Odyssey Health Care. The family requests memorial donations be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice. Palm Mortuary-Jones handled arrangements.

Robert G. Soden, 76, of Florence, died at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Latonia. He was a dispatcher with Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Sims Soden; sons, Michael Soden of Milford, Mich., Donald Sims of Florence and Roy Sims of Fort Wright; daughters, Patricia Hickman of Brookville, Ind., Donna Levinson of Florence and Susan Lambert of Dry Ridge; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, with visitation at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.
