B. L. Sodens Pass 60th Anniversary
(Son of Thomas & Kate Soden)
Mr. and Mrs. Ben L. Soden
of 1916 D Street spent their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday with a small group
of close friends and relatives at their home.
Married at Ridgefield on April 27,
1892, Mr. and Mrs. Soden
moved to Vancouver about 50 years ago. For may years Mr. Soden
worked in logging camps in this area and was later employed at the Hidden brick
works. During World War II he was a pipe threader at the local shipyards.
Mrs. Soden was active until three years ago when she suffered a broken ankle which made it necessary for her to use crutches.
While the anniversary celebration was not planned as such, it snowballed into a Sunday dinner party with a table centered with a large cake commemorating the occasion. The serving table was one which the couple have used all their married lives.

Emily's pages of the past
There's a lovely little story attached to part of a current exhibit at the Clark County Historical Museum about how World War II touched and forever changed this area.
In the 1940s, during the war years, a local woman, Emily Downs, started a scrapbook, carefully cutting from The Columbian pictures and articles about local people in the Armed Forces.
Whether they were reported killed, missing in action or just got a promotion, those who had their names or pictures in the paper quickly ended up in the scrapbook.
Emily was born in Vancouver with Down Syndrome, but didn't let that stop her from getting around the city as a friendly, energetic person.
Years later, the scrapbook ended up in the care of Echo Ritter, a Vancouver friend. She showed it sometimes to people at the local museum, and that's how the scrapbook so lovingly assembled decades ago became a part of the exhibit, with reproductions of its items posted.
The exhibit continues through January if you'd like to stop by at the museum at 1511 Main Street.
Emily, now 78, has been in Emerald Terrace Nursing Center for about 18 years, where on good days she continues a long interest in creating things, still liking to draw.

She married Richard SODON, and in 1851 was left a widow with two sons dependent on her efforts for support. By diligence and good management she provided home comforts and educated her children, instilling in their young minds true Christian principles. In 1858 Mrs. Sodon married Rev. Owen R. Owens, who died in 1859. For several years her home has been with her son, A. J. Sodon, Pittsburg, Pa., surrounded with comforts, loved and honored by all who have known her true life.
