Miscellaneous NOTES

Thank You!, Land  Surveys, Misc Notes

Thank You Very Much!!!!

Once again, I have Mary Therese Powers to thank for all of this information.  I
hope she can dredge up some more for me. ;-) (Judie Montgomery)
Time and again I have Janice Rockmore to thank for finding source documents! (Joyce Brown) I would also like to thank Kathleen Vorgang for all the material she has unearthed, and Beverly for her many trips to the archives.

Many thanks to all our Soden researchers who continue to share their material with complete strangers!

Thank You Very Much

I Found this on the web somewhere:

"SODEN

I am researching the early Soden family of Monmouth and Middlesex Counties in NJ. I have found reference to a Jonathan Soden in 1723 in township records of Middletown as an indenter and overseer of the poor. A possible son John is mentioned in references in the 1740's. Does your access to volumes regarding Middletown history indicate any further references to the Soden family in Middletown?

RESPONSE:

I found no references to the family name in "Historical and Genealogical Miscellany", all five volumes, nothing in Hornor's, "This Old Monmouth of Ours". I found one reference in "Old Times in Old Monmouth" by Salter and Beekman, on page 54, under what is possibly an alternate spelling:

"OLD TIMES IN MONMOUTH"

By Edwin Salter & George Beekman

Pg. 54:

"..............Tom Store and Andrew Woolley, claim a tract between Cranbury and Devil's Brook, possessed by Josiah Davidson's sons that has two new houses built thereon, in which is included the whole tract of the late President Hamilton (probably John Hamilton, governor from 1736 to 1738); and also Mr. Alexander's surveys where THOMAS SOWDEN lives; he has sold part of this tract to Hillinshead where McGee lives; also has sold some to Josiah Davidson, to Doore Marlet, John Wetherill and James Wilson....."

The above was in regards to Indian land claims, but it gives a location that I thought might be worth knowing about.

In "Genealogies of NJ Families", Vol I, pg. 557, there's a reference to a Soden family member in the 1800's. This also makes reference to a set of books called "History of Monmouth County, 1664-1920", which says the children of John and Mary (Megill) Soden, M. 1873, may be found in Vol. III, p. 193. He being noted as born 1838, and named the son of Jonathan C. and Maria ______ Soden."

10 Pound Baby Born
Roy McKee, manager and operator of the Yacolt Stage line is flashing a broad grin and passing out the cigars these days.  All because June 25, he became the proud father of a 10 pound daughter. The baby was born at the family home, 1013 West Eighteenth street. She has been named Marjorie Louise. The young lady is the first child in the McKee household and their many friends in Vancouver are extending congratulations on its arrival.  Sharing in the felicitations are Mr. and Mrs. George McKee, the baby's paternal grandparents of Amboy and Mrs. McKee's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Mathys of this city.

(This is the birth of Patricia McKee Bauer - the doctor ended up delivering her and naming her Alice Patricia for her grandmother Alice McKee. She is the great granddaughter of Thomas & Kate Soden)

Many Friends Pay Respects to Mr. and Mrs. Soden
(Son of Thomas & Kate Soden)
Mr. and Mrs. B.L. Soden entertained friends and relatives yesterday at their home at 1916 D Street, in honor of their golden wedding anniversary. They were married in the Ridgefield vicinity fifty years ago on April 27, 1892.

Among friends who dropped in during the afternoon were Mrs. G. Monson, Mrs. Elmina Edmonds, Mrs. Maude McMullen, Mrs. Sylvia Horn, MR. and Mrs. M. Carpenter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smiley, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Smiley, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Edmonds, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Laue, Miss Madge Laue, Mr. Howard Anderson, Mrs. Bernie Koch, Miss Beatrice Koch, Miss Ann Smiley and Mrs. Alexina Eatch, all of Ridgefield.

Others who came to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Soden on the occasion were Mrs. John Blied, Mrs. E. L. Downs, Mrs. M. E. Marvin of Portland, Mrs. Mary Roth, Mrs. F. D. B. L. Sodens Pass 60th Anniversary
(Son of Thomas & Kate Soden)
Mr. and Mrs. Ben L. Soden of 1916 D Street spent their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday with a small group of close friends and relatives at their home.
Married at Ridgefield on April 27, 1892, Mr. and Mrs. Soden moved to Vancouver about 50 years ago. For may years Mr. Soden worked in logging camps in this area and was later employed at the Hidden brick works. During World War II he was a pipe threader at the local shipyards.

Mrs. Soden was active until three years ago when she suffered a broken ankle which made it necessary for her to use crutches.

While the anniversary celebration was not planned as such, it snowballed into a Sunday dinner party with a table centered with a large cake  commemorating the occasion. The serving table was one which the couple have used all their married lives.

Emily's pages of the past

There's a lovely little story attached to part of a current exhibit at the Clark County Historical Museum about how World War II touched and forever changed this area.

In the 1940s, during the war years, a local woman, Emily Downs, started a scrapbook, carefully cutting from The Columbian pictures and articles about local people in the Armed Forces.

Whether they were reported killed, missing in action or just got a promotion, those who had their names or pictures in the paper quickly ended up in the scrapbook.

Emily was born in Vancouver with Down Syndrome, but didn't let that stop her from getting around the city as a friendly, energetic person.

Years later, the scrapbook ended up in the care of Echo Ritter, a Vancouver friend. She showed it sometimes to people at the local museum, and that's how the scrapbook so lovingly assembled decades ago became a part of the exhibit, with reproductions of its items posted.

The exhibit continues through January if you'd like to stop by at the museum at 1511 Main Street.

Emily, now 78, has been in Emerald Terrace Nursing Center for about 18 years, where on good days she continues a long interest in creating things, still liking to draw.

Mary Therese Powers is the person who sent this information to me.  She wrote:

It appears from the Kenton County data that Thomas had one minor child who needed guardianship after his and Hannah's deaths.  Marabra Soden Butts was born in NJ, as were the other Soden men in the area, but Elnora Soden, who is in the Butts household in 1850 - age 28 - was born in Tennessee.  Didn't we see that pattern with the Thomas and Hannah household: some kids born in Tennessee as they tried out the forge there?  I am not so sure that she has to be Thomas' sister.  If the time frame is right Meriby/Marabra could be his oldest child, and Elnora the youngest.  There are no significant death records for that time period in Kentucky, so I have no way of figuring out who Marabra Butts parents were.  From the birth record I sent, it seems as though she is Clinton Butts' second wife.  Since that name crops up in your family and is very unusual, I have to think there is some close connection between the families.

Jim's great grandmother Mary Nelson "Molly" Soden Lynch had a sister named Marabra.  I had never heard of the name before I saw hers.

Mary Therese and I are trying to fit Elwood and his brothers and sister in this Thomas and Hannah household, but have no solid proof.

In the "Compendium of American Genealogy" there is mention of a Thomas Theodore Soden (1780-1844) from Millville, NJ to Tennessee abt. 1825; who established the first blast furnace in the South.  He married Hannah Kline who was born in 1795.  There is only one problem with that and that is that Elwood was born 1929 in NJ.  Elwood had a sister born in
Kentucky 1831 and a brother in Tennessee 1832.

Will of Thomas Soden:  Caldwell County, Kentucky, Will Book B:77  Mentions wife Hannah, who is to get property undivided until "my youngest child comes of age."  Portion of his land - "say one hundred acres from the upper end of the tract" should be sold to pay his debts."  As his children marry or come of age
they are to receive a horse, featherbed and furniture.  He signed with his mark.  Will written 2 Apr 1844, proven May term 1845.  Children's names are not given.

In the Deed Books, Lyon County, Kentucky was a listing:
Soden's Heirs to Garret Gray, C:509

Message: Looking for information on George Soden, he was a friend of my grandfather, Albert Conrad
and he killed Hattie Knapp in Hazel, NY. around 1930 in the boarding house she owned. I have recently learned that he came from the Strucca Pa. area. He was married to Elsie Crandall of Hazel, NY. for a time, seperated or divorced, and then took up with Hattie Knapp. My grandfather was also married to one of the Crandall girls, Mabel. Making George Soden and Albert Conrad brother-in-laws for a time. Mabel died (1923) and he also lived in the same boarding house with his X-brother-in-law. Anyone with info please e-mail me, it will be appreciated....veredvs13@aol.com

Message: Hi David--found "filing date" of marriage George Sodan and Elie Crandall, Delaware County, July 16, 1919. Spelling is listed as I have it here. Also George W. Soden (wife Maggie) and Hattie Knapp (husband Charles) both listed on 1900 Town of Sidney Federal census. Also a Hattie Knapp buried in Fishs Eddy Cemetary. You probably already have all this, since I am so limited in my searching, but just in case.. my email is down for some reason, so I can't send this direct.

PUGH
I am trying to find information on Jerome PUGH. He lived in Jones county in the late 1880's and 90's. He died in 1896 in Martell. I can't seem to find which township that might be in so that I might locate his grave and any other records on him. Hopefully you can help in this search. I have been in touch with Sue Soden, she happens to be a relative through Jerome's marriage to Eliza (Lida) Soden. She also seem to have come to a dead end on info regarding Jerome.
