Gilbert Talbot, born about 1215, died 1274; served in Wales at the time of the insurrection of Llewellyn against King Henry III in 1256. He was Justice of Hereford and was ordered to fortify Monmouth Castle, of which he was then Governor. He married Gwendaline, daughter, and at length heiress of Rhys ap Griffith, descended from Tewdor Mawr, King of South Wales. In consequence of this alliance, the Talbots, instead of their own arms, "Bendy of ten, argent and gules" adopted those of the Princes of Wales, viz., Gules, a lion rampant or. He died in 1274 and was succeeded by his son, Richard.
