The Genealogy &
Local History Collection is one of the largest in Southern California
and has a strong emphasis in 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries United
States. The Collection includes printed books and journals, microfilm,
microfiche, and CDs. To determine what items are included in the
Collection search the Carlsbad City Library Catalog. The Library has a
site license to Ancestry Plus. Ancestry Plus may only be accessed from
the Genealogy Division at the Cole Library. Two notable collections
are the United States census on microfilm and the UMI Genealogy and
Local History Collection on microfiche. the Library has the US census
microfilm rolls for 1790-1870 (except for slave schedules); it has the
complete schedules for California from 1850-1920. In addition, the
Library has the largest collection of census indexes in Southern
California. The UMI Genealogy and Local History Collection includes
genealogies, local histories, genealogy journals, and primary sources.
There is a small circulating collection of duplicate books.
Genealogy staff has created User Guides to assist patrons in using
some of the more complex or difficult sources in the collection. User
Guides can be found online at
The North San Diego County Genealogical Society supports the Genealogy
