William Martin's

Estate Settlement

Chancery Court Records of McMinn County, TN

[NOTE: The following records were provided in 1997 by Paul Kelley of Knoxville, TN, a descendant of William and Mary A. (Cotter) Martin, and typed by Sandra (Nipper) Ratledge for inclusion in Kinfolks in the Knobs website.]

On 5 Sep 1870 J. H. Crockett was appointed administrator of the estate of William Martin and directed "to take into your possession and control all the goods chattles claims and papers of the said William Martin and return a true and perfect inventory thereof to our next County Court, to collect and pay all debts, and to do and transact all the duties in relation to said estate which lawfully devolves on you as Administrator and after having settled up said estate fully to deliver the residue thereof to those who are by law entitled." At the same session it was "Ordered by the Court that Henry Brock, Julius Miller, and I. [?] P. Duggan be appointed commissioners in connection with the County Surveyor to go upon the real estate of which William Martin died seized and [?] assign the widow dower." At the November 1870 session it was "Ordered by the Court that the report of sale of the personal property of William Martin dec'd be received and recorded" and "Ordered by the Court that the inventory of the estate of William Martin be received and spread of record." The report and inventory have not been found. J. H. Crockett was a son-in-law of William Martin, having married William's daughter Catherine.
