EDITH MARTIN'S CLAIM OF WIDOW FOR SERVICE PENSION,
UNDER ACT OF MARCH 9TH, 1878
WAR OF 1812
State of Tennessee
County of McMinn
On this the 25th day of October, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy-nine personally appeared before me R. A. Ellis Clerk of the County Court the same being a Court of Record within and for the county and State aforesaid (1) Caroline Martin aged 51 years, a resident of Monroe, in the State of Tennessee, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is a wodow of (2) William Martin deceased, who was the identical (3) William Martin, who served under the name of (4) William Martin as a (5) Private in the company commanded by Captain McCamey in the regiment of East Tenn. Vols or drafted men in the war of 1812; that her said husband (6) volunteered or was drafted in Roane County, Tennessee, and continued in actual service in said war for the term of (7) six months, and whose services teminated, by reason of (8) discharge at Mobile, Ala. A.D. 1815. She further states that (9) she does not know full description of her husband at time of enlistment. She further states that she was married to the said William Martin, in the county of McMinn, and in the state of Tennessee, on the 6th day of March A.D. 1866, by one (10) Elhu Kelley, who was a (11) Justice of the Peace and that her name before her said marriage was Caroline Cline, and that she has not remarried since the death of the said soldier and she further states that (12) she had not been previously married [SIC] but her said husband had been married to one Mary Cotter who died in McMinn County, Tenn. about Nov. 8, 1865 and that her said husband (13) William Martin died in McMinn County in the State of Tennessee, on the 8th day of August, A.D. 1870 and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her husband since the date of his discharge from the Army, viz: (14) said soldier lived in Roane, Hawkins, Cocke, and Greene and McMinn Cos. Tenn. and claimant has lived in North Carolina, Georgia, and McMinn CO., Tenn. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the pension to which she may be entitled under the provision of Sections 4736 to 4740 inclusive Revised Statutes and the Act of March 9, 1878 and hereby constitutes and appoints with full power of substitution and revocation W. S. Gaston of Athens, McMinn County, Tennessee her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute her claim and she further declares that she has heretofore made no application for (15) bounty land or pension but her said husband the soldier drew a land warrant but she does not know the number or date thereof and that her residence is county of Monroe, State of Tennessee, and that her post office address is Athens, McMinn County, Tennessee.

Also personally appeared Caroline Crockett, aged 55 years, residing in McMinn County, State of Tennessee, and Josiah H. Crockett, aged 49 years residing in McMinn County, State of Tennessee persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, say that they have known the said Caroline Martin for 24 years and for 24 years, respectively; that they were present and saw her sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; and they further say that they are able to identify her as the person who was the wife of the identical (16) William Martin, who rendered the service alleged in the above application for the company of Captain McCamey in the regiment of East Tenn Vols or drafted men in the war of 1812 by the following named facts and circumstances, viz: (17) They have heard said soldier and others talk of said service and know that said soldier and claimant lived together as husband and wife and were so regarded and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

Sworn to and subscribed before me this 25th day of October, A.D. 1879; and I hereby certify that the contents of the above declaration, &c. were fully made known and explained to the applicant and witnesses before swearing, including the words erased and the words added; and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim.

SUPPORTING AFFIDAVIT FOR WIDOW'S PENSION
County of McMinn
Before me the undersigned personally appeared Elihu Kelly of County and State aforesaid to me well known whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who being by me first duly sworn according to law says that he is well acquainted with Caroline Martin widow of William Martin dec'd and that he well knew said William Martin and that he was an acting Justice of the Peace in and for McMinn County Tennessee and as such on or about March 6, 1866 united in marriage said William Martin and said Caroline formerly Caroline Cline.
That he is informed and believes that said fact cannot be proved by a certified copy of town, county or other public record or sworn copy of church record for the reason that as such record was ever made or kept except a County record which he is informed is misplaced, mislaid or destroyed so that after diligent search by the proper custodian cannot be found.
And he further states that he has no interest in the pension claim of Caroline Martin.

SUPPORTING AFFIDAVIT FOR WIDOW'S PENSION

Before me personally appeared Josiah H. Crockett, Jobe M. Pangle and Samuel A. Crockett of County and State aforesaid to me well known whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who being by me first duly sworn according to law say that they are well acquainted with and live neighbors to Caroline Martin and that they knew her husband William Martin dec'd; that said William Martin died in McMinn County, Tennessee about the 8th of August 1870 and that said Caroline Martin has not remarried since his death and that their knowledge of said facts is derived from neighborship and acquaintance as before stated and that of Josiah H. Crockett and Jobe M. Pangle from seeing said William Martin dec'd as he lay a corpse and the said Samuel A. Crockett from seeing the coffin in which they claimed or it was understood he was as they carried him out to bury him.
And the said Josiah H. Crockett and Samuel A. Crockett well knew his (said William Martin's) former wife Mary Martin formerly Mary Cotter and that she died about Nov. 8, 1865 and that their knowledge of said fact is derived from living neighbors to and being well acquainted with her at the time and from general report that she was dead and buried in the neighborhood at the time.
And said witnesses all further state that they have no interest in the pension claim of Caroline Martin.

Ellis Clerk of the County Court for said County hereby certify that I have examined the marriage records in my office and find no record of the marriage of Wm Martin to Caroline Cline and further certify that I have no record of March 1866 and that I am the proper custodian of said records. Given under my hand and seal of office at office in Athens this the 23rd day of April 1880.
