MILITARY RECORDS
Claimant William Brannon of Mount Vernon, Monroe Co., Tenn. was issued Bounty Land Warrant #34411 on 23 July 1856 for 160 acres from Act of Congress 3 Mar. 1855. He entered service on 7 July 1836 and was discharged 31 July 1836 in the Florida War, certified by Commissioner of Pensions, P. Clayton. His pension file contained one Bounty Land Certificate #13237 to William Brannum but marked "cancelled." This must have been the one he returned to the Commissioner of Pensions.


WILLIAM BRANNON'S AFFIDAVIT FOR BOUNTY LAND

State of Tennessee

County of Monroe

On this 22 day of March 1855 personally appeared before me N. J. Spillman a Justice of the Peace within and for the county of aforesaid William Brannum aged 38 years a resident of Monroe County, Tennessee who being duly sworn according to law declares he is the identical William Brannum who was a private in the Company commanded by Captain Thomas J. Caldwell in the Regt. commanded by Col. _____ to go [to] the Florida War that he volunteered in Monroe County, Tenn. and was mustered into the United States service on the 7th day of July 1836 and continued in actual service in the said war for fourteen days and was honorably discharged at the Cherokee Agency on Camp Wool on the 31 July 1836.

He makes his declaration for the purpose of obtaining bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act granting Bounty Land to certain officers and soldiers approved 3rd day March 1855. He also declares that he has not received a warrant for bounty land under this or any other act of Congress nor made application therefor.

Spillman before whom the foregoing declaration and affidavit were made and who had thereunto subscribed his name, is and was at the time of so doing, an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the County aforesaid duly elected, commissioned and sworn and his signature is genuine.

Sir

A land warrant, No. 45405 for 120 acres, was issued in your favor, under the act of 3rd March / 55 and sent to Kain & Jones of Knoxville, Tenn. You are not, consequently, entitled to the warrant, No. 13237 for a like amount of bounty, awarded under the same act and forwarded to you at Mount Vernon, Tenn.

You will please, therefore, return either of these warrants for cancellation: caveats having been filed against both of them to arrests the issue of patents thereon.

Dear Sir

At the request of my Neighbor William Brannon I herewith enclose you a Land Warrant issued to him through mistake it seems from the enclosed letter that one of same No. acres have been issued to him and sent to Kain & Jones, at Knoxville which he knew nothing of until informed by the pension office. Mr. Brannon says he never filed any declaration but the one for his services in Capt. Caldwell's Co. and he is entitled to 160 acres having never rec'd any land warrant except the one herewith enclosed. He wishes you if you please to see that the enclosed warrant is returned to the proper office and a warrant for 160 issued to him and handed to you and you enclose the same to him at Mt. Vernon Monroe Co. Tenn.

WILLIAM BRANNON'S SECOND AFFIDAVIT

State of Tennessee

Monroe County

On this 2? th day of May 1856 personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace within and for the county and state aforesaid William Brannon who being duly sworn according to law states that he never served in Captain Tedford Co. of Tennessee Volunteers in the Cherokee Disturbances of 1838, nor in any other service, neither has he even [procuted?] an application for Bounty Land than the one upon which Land Warrant No. 13237 issued through mistake and which warrant he has returned to pension office that one may issue for the amount of 160 acres due him for his services in Capt. Caldwell Co.
