Private John Richard Baker was born March 17, 1840, in Jonesboro, Tenn. to David Baker and Elizabeth Waggoner (Baker). He enlisted June 28, 1861, in Monroe County, Tenn. with Company G, 1st Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. Discharged Feb. 27, 1862, re-enlisted in Company B, 2nd Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. Captured at Parks Mills, (Park City) Tenn. on Feb. 24, 1863. Sent to Lousiville, Kentucky on March 5, 1864 for exchange, and then sent to Camp Chase, Ohio. Discharged Mar. 9, 1864. Rejoined Unit, captured again at Clarksville, Tenn. and sent to Fort Delaware on Mar. 17, 1864, from where he was discharged in February, 1865. After the war he was a cabinet maker in Bonham, Texas until 1897, when he moved to Amarillo, Texas and drew his pension. He was a staunch member of UCV (United Confederate Veterans. He died Sept.15, 1915 in Amarillo, Texas.
