Her father and two brothers David and Daniel Ratledge were mail contractors on a route between Monroe CO, TN and Murphy, NC until the Civil War interrupted mail service. David and Daniel Ratledge served in 3rd (Lillard's) Mounted Infantry of the CSA. Bud Tallent's brother-in-law was Jasper Newton Barnett, husband of Nancy Melissa Ann Ratledge. He served in the 3rd TN Mounted Infantry Regiment, USA in Company G under Capt. Enoch Voyles.

Lemuel Talent filed a pension claim 18 Feb 1886 listing his post office as Madisonville, Monroe CO, TN, but formerly of Cherokee CO, NC. Several Madisonville attorneys were employed to represent his case, and four special government agents investigated. Depositions were taken from James Tallent of Sink who stated that Lemuel once lived in that section of Monroe CO, TN. George W. Tallent of Madisonville, TN also deposed that he was a former neighbor and that they were not related to Lemuel. Finally, the pension was granted at $4 per month beginning 18 Feb 1886 until his death.

His widow was then granted a pension of $8 monthly and $2 for her minor child under sixteen. Her claim was first rejected because she could not establish her husband's death date. However, a letter from the Commissioner of Internal Revenue to the Commissioner of Pensions, 15 Jan 1896, stated that Lemuel was an employee of the IRS and a storekeeper at Gudger in the second district from 13 Dec 1889 to 23 May 1893. Collector Bowen at Knoxville reported that Talent died 23 May 1893, and this letter was dated 27 May 1893.

The widow was listed as dying in Etowah, TN on 11 Nov 1926. Their daughter Debbie appeared in the file as Mrs. W. E. Fain of Rt. 4 Athens, TN. Son Harvey Talent lived in Etowah, TN in 1939.
