He filed pension claim 23 Mar 1891. Pension was granted at $8 per mo. from date of filing until 4 Dec 1891 when amount was increased to $10 per mo. Last increase was 5 July 1905 and changed to $12 per mo. Widow's pension claims were filed, but she was denied because she married soldier after 27 Jun 1890, a deadline. Each of their three minor children were granted pensions until their sixteenth birthdays. George Renegar, general store owner in the Clearwater Community of Mt Verd PO, was appointed guardian.

Soldier's name was actually Stephen A. (Alexander) Goins and probably the initial was misunderstood by muster-in agent.

Stephen Goins' discharge certificate reads as follows:

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Know ye, that Stephen J. Goins a private of Captain Timothy Lyons Company C Third Regiment of Tennessee Mounted Infantry volunteers who was enrolled on the twenty-sixth day of July one thousand eight hundred and sixty-four to serve 100 days or during the war, is hereby DISCHARGED from the service of the United States, this Thirtieth day of November 1864, at Knoxville, Tennessee by reason of expiration of tirm of servis. No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist. Said Stephen J. Goins was born in McMinn Co in the State of Tennessee, is twenty-one years of age, five feet six inches high, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, and by occupation, when enrolled a farmer. Given at Knoxville, Tennessee this thirtieth day of November 1864.
