Robert George and Eliza are my Great Grandparents.
These are some small pieces of their story ...
Robert George DOUGLAS ( Robert
Robert George was born on Saturday, 9th May 1840 in Adelaide, South Australia.
Robert George was the oldest of 10 children , 6 boys and 4 girls for Elizabeth ROBERTSON and Robert DOUGLAS.
Elizabeth was aged about 20 years, Robert was a sailmaker aged about 36 years, and the family was living in Pirie Street.
Robert George DOUGLAS was baptised on Sunday, 2nd August 1840 in Trinity Church, Adelaide. ~s03
Robert George's siblings were
Isabella Jane (b1842),
William Alexander (b1847),
Hugh (b1849), Colin (b1851), Elizabeth (b1854), Jane Chalmes (b1856), John Ingram (b1859) and Shelto (b1863).
Robert George was counted in the January 1841 South Australian Census,
he was the male under 7yrs, listed with his parents. ~s08
Robert George may have attended one of the early schools in Adelaide.
Robert George probably learnt his Tent Making trade from an early age, by working with his father.
Hannah was aged about 29 years, Edward was a butcher aged about 23 years, and the family was living in Hindmarsh.
Eliza's birth was registered on Saturday 5th April 1851 her father.
Notes - Edward signed the registration with an "x", he probably could not read or write
- the Registrar misspelt Edward's surname as BRUMLEY ~s01, s02
Eliza's siblings were Louisa Matilda (b1853), Frederick Edward (b1855), Amy Ellen (b1858) and Bertha Amelia (b1859).
Robert George DOUGLAS married Eliza Hannah BROMLEY
on Monday, 28th March 1870
in Adelaide, South Australia.
They married in the General Register Office in Victoria Square.
Robert George was a tentmaker and a bachelor aged 29 years. Eliza was a spinster aged 19 years.
The witnesses were Frederick BROMLEY, a butcher and C ANDERSON, a labourer.
Note - Frederick may have been Eliza's brother. Frederick would have been aged 15 years and 3 months. ~ s01, s02
Robert George and Eliza may have lived with, or near to Robert George's parents.
Robert George's father, Robert DOUGLAS died on 20th January 1871.
Frederick Arthur DOUGLAS was born on Thursday 10th Febuary 1876 in Thebarton, Adelaide.
Frederick was their 3rd child.
Robert George was aged 35 years, Eliza was aged 24 years and the family had moved to Thebarton. ~s02
Robert George and Eliza may have been living with, or near to Eliza's parents.
In Febuary 1876, Robert George DOUGLAS was described as
"... 36 years of age, 5ft. 7in. high, very dark complexion, black hair and whiskers not shaved, ...
a drover ... with a man named ROBERTSON, at Beltana, with sheep of Mr. White's, ... "
Note - Robertson may have been a related to Elizabeth ROBERTSON, Robert George's mother.
Eliza's father, Edward BROMLEY died on 16th March 1878 in Thebarton.
Robert George , Eliza and family moved to the
West Coast of South Australia.
Robert George , Eliza and family moved back to
Thebarton in Adelaide.
Robert George and Eliza may have been living with, or near to Eliza's mother.
Robert George and Eliza's 1st child to marry was their oldest, Alice.
Alice Maude DOUGLAS married Julian Edmund Tenison WOODS on 31st October 1889 in Adelaide.
Douglas WOODS was born in 1891 in Hamilton, Victoria. Douglas was Robert George and Eliza's first grandchild.
Frederick Arthur DOUGLAS died on Thursday 5th January 1893 in hospital, in Adelaide. ~s02
Frederick was buried on Friday 6th January in West Terrace Cemetery. Frederick was aged 16 years and 10 months.
Frederick's grave is in section P3, row 19, grave 91. There is no memorial, and no other markers. ~s12
Robert George and Eliza's next child to marry was Alexander, their 2nd child.
Alexander George DOUGLAS married Alice Catherine MONK on 4th February 1895 in Norwood, South Australia.
Robert George , Eliza and family moved to
Broken Hill, New South Wales.
Robert George and Eliza's 7th grandchild,
Archie Norman DOUGLAS was born in 1898 in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
Archie's parents, Alexander and Catherine had moved to Broken Hill, probably looking for work in the mines.
Robert George, Eliza and their family moved to Broken Hill around 1900, most probably looking for work.
Harry and Ethel would have been teenagers and Hugh, Wallace and Tom Edgar just small children.
Some of the younger children may have attended school in Broken Hill.
Archie William DOUGLAS married Alma V ROOK in 1900 in Broken Hill.
Archie William was Robert George and Eliza's 5th child.
Bertha Elizabeth DOUGLAS married Henry John Tonner KELLY in 1900 in Broken Hill.
Bertha Elizabeth was Robert George and Eliza's 6th child.
Robert George's mother, Elizabeth DOUGLAS nee ROBERTSON died on 31st October 1903 in Walkerville, Adelaide.
Eliza's mother, Hannah BROMLEY nee McCARTHY died on 28th July 1906 in Adelaide, South Australia.
Albert Edward DOUGLAS married Gertrude McDONALD in 1908 in Broken Hill.
Albert Edward was Robert George and Eliza's 4th child.
At some time, the family lived in Williams Street, Broken Hill.
Albert Edward, Archie William, Hugh Norman and Tom Edgar worked on the BHP Mine in Broken Hill.
The families lived thru "the big strike" in 1909 in Broken Hill.
Harry Robert DOUGLAS married Olive Marion ROBERTSON in 1913 in Broken Hill.
Harry Robert was Robert George and Eliza's 7th child.
Robert George , Eliza and some of the family returned to
Adelaide, South Australia.
Alexander George, Albert Edward, Archie William, Bertha Elizabeth and Harry Robert stayed in Broken Hill, with their families.
Wallace Gordon DOUGLAS married Coralie MATHEWS in September 1915 in Adelaide.
Wallace Gordon was Robert George and Eliza's 10th child,
Ethel Hannah DOUGLAS married John BARRINGTON in 1917 in Perth, Western Australia.
Ethel Hannah was Robert George and Eliza's 8th child.
Wallace Gordon DOUGLAS died in October 1917 in WW1 in Belgium.
Wallace Gordon was Robert George and Eliza's 10th child.
Albert Edward, Archie William, Harry Robert, Hugh Norman and Tom Edgar all survived WW1 and returned to Australia.
Hugh Norman DOUGLAS married Constance CALDICOTT in May 1920 in Adelaide.
Hugh Norman was Robert George and Eliza's 9th child.
Tom Edgar DOUGLAS married Kathleen Mary OWENS in Febuary 1921 in Adelaide.
Tom Edgar was Robert George and Eliza's 10th child.
1 F Alice Maude DOUGLAS was born on Wednesday 9th August 1871 in Adelaide. 2 M Alexander George DOUGLAS was born on Wednesday 16th July 1873 in Adelaide. 3 M Frederick Arthur DOUGLAS was born on Thursday 10th Febuary 1876 in Adelaide.
Frederick died on Thursday 5th January 1893 in hospital, in Adelaide.
Frederick was buried on Friday 6th January 1893 in West Terrace Cemetery. Frederick was aged 16 years.
4 M Albert Edward DOUGLAS was born on Friday 8th November 1878 in Streaky Bay. 5 M Archie William DOUGLAS was born on Tuesday 21st September 1880 in Mary Vale, near Streaky Bay. 6 F Bertha Elizabeth DOUGLAS was born on Saturday 7th October 1882 in Adelaide. 7 M Harry Robert DOUGLAS was born on Monday 1st June 1885 in Adelaide. 8 F Ethel Hannah DOUGLAS was born on Sunday 14th August 1887 in Adelaide. 9 M Hugh Norman DOUGLAS was born on Monday 12th August 1889 in Adelaide. 10 M Wallace Gordon DOUGLAS was born on Saturday 30th January 1892 in Adelaide. 11 M Tom Edgar DOUGLAS was born on Wednesday 28th August 1895 in Henley Park, Adelaide.
Tom Edgar married Kathleen Mary OWENS.
Tom Edgar and Kathleen are my Grandparents.
Eliza Hannah DOUGLAS nee BROMLEY died on Wednesday 30th January 1924 in Annesley Avenue, Norwood, Adelaide.
Eliza's cause of death was heart failure.
Eliza was buried on Friday 1st February 1924 in West Terrace Cemetery. Eliza was aged 72 years.
Valery Patricia KELLY was buried on Saturday 16th February 1924 with her grandmother. Valerie was aged just 7 months.
Robert George DOUGLAS died on Wednesday 2nd September 1925 in Annesley Avenue, Norwood, Adelaide.
Robert George was buried on Thursday 3rd September 1925 in West Terrace Cemetery. Robert George was aged 85 years.
Robert George and Eliza are buried together, with their grandaughter.
Their grave is in Flinders, row 4, east, , grave 14. There is no memorial, or other markers.
Robert George DOUGLAS and Eliza Hannah BROMLEY are my Great Grandparents.
Robert George and Eliza were survived by 9 of their children,
many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Their decendants have spread throughout Australia.
