Becky Mann has Roderick listed as a child of James Shelton. worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=1216sarahlynch&id=I4135

James Shelton in SHELTON FAMILIES OF McMINN COUNTY TENNESSEE pg 8 "A letter from Chapelle Shelton, a minister, written on November 7, 1953, claims to have his lineag a generation beyound Roderick. He too is a gr-gr-grandson of Roderick. The pertinent passages are here quoted:

I am 66 years old. My father lived to be 86 years old. He always took time to tell us children about our people. His father was James Shelton and James' father was Dave Shelton and Dave's father was Roderick Shelton and Roderic's father was James Shelton who settled at Norfolk and fought under George Washington... Roderick Shelton had 7 sons and settled in Viginia. My great-grandfather, Dave, was Roderick's son who settled in Madison County. It use to be (part of) Buncombe County.

The statement in the above letter that James fought under George Washinton is probably intended to mean that Roderick fought under the General, for he wrote in a letter a year earlier: "James Shelton was born in Virginia, had several sons, and his father was Roderick Shelton that fought under George Washington." Roderick's father, now believed to be James' brother, John, was a son of Ralph Shelton. In his letter, Chapelle wrote further that his great-grandfather, David, son of Roderick and brother of James stayed in Buncombe County, now Madison County, and founded the Shelton Laurel Branch of the family. This scribe believes that Chapelle is in error also when he names James as father of Roderick. We now believe that James' brother John was his father."

The LDS Family History Center files have Ralph Jr. b. 1709 as Roderick's father and another file online by Becky Mann 1216@juno.com has James, Johns' brother as Rodericks father. (Joe Payne)

John married Philepinea.

They had the following children:

+ 67 M i Roderick Shelton was born in 1755 and died in 1816.

57. Azariah Shelton (Ralph , Ralph , Peter , (Sir) John , William , William , Ralph , John , John ) was born in 1747 in , , Amelia, Virginia. He was sealed to his parents on 15 Mar 1957 in the Salt Lake temple. Azariah was baptized on 8 Nov 1954. He was endowed on 26 Sep 1956.

He moved to Grainger County, Tenn and then Rhea County, Tenn. He was never in military service due to his poor vision and was completely blind a few years before he died.

The Shelton researchers claim that his father was Azariah Shelton and his mother was Sarah Holt. They supposedly had 4 boys including Ralph.

Three were named after biblical persons (Hezikiah, David and Azariah) These 3 supposedly were physicians and Azariah wrote, amoung others things--medical texts.

Ralph Shelton married Anna Taylor, supposedly the sister to Joel Taylor in 1828 in Grainger Co., TN. Ralph and Anna had at least 8 children. Some Shelton researchers show an additional 2 children and also have Ralph married earlier, with 4 children by the first wife but no one seems to have any proof.

Ralph and Anna (Taylor) Shelton's daughter Penelope married Robert Beeler, b. 1838 at Rutledge in 1861. Her husband, Robert fought on the Union side in the Civil War. Ralph Sheltons wife, Anna died in 1883, and Robert and Penelope moved from Clear Spring in Grainger Co, TN to Elk Farm, McDonald Co. MO.

Robert and Penelope eventually had 15 children. Both died at Neosho, Newton Co, MO in 1924, he in Feb. and she in August.

Ralph Shelton supposedly died in the mid 1850's. (probably in Grainger Co.) Anna (Taylor) Shelton died in 1883. (probably at Clear Spring, Grainger Co.) Penelope (Shelton) Beeler died in 1924. (Newton Co, Mo)

I have found out that my Ralph Shelton had a ferry on the Clinch at a particular "S" shaped bend on the river. It was not far from Puncheons creek. One side of the ferry was in Claiborne Co. where Ralph owned land(Sheltons ford) and the other side was in Grainger where Edmond Holt owned land. (Holt´s ford) He had this ferry from 1817 or so until he lost it in 1846.

Crispen E. Shelton above is said to have been married to Sarah Williams.  The lineage of Chrispian is confussed by several researchers but the following source information for the marriage and fact that this is Chrispian above follows:

  1. Gary Shelton, 23 Idlewild Ct., Pacifica, CA 94044, in November 1994. His source was book by Dr. Frank H. Shelton, 215 W. Columbia St., Colorado Springs, CO 80907 (apparently out-of-print). Gary descends from Sarah and Crispin).
