Ralph Shelton came to Virginia about 1702 with Thomas Meriwether.SHELTON FAMILIES OF McMINN CO. TN - James Shelton
"Ralph Shelton is said to have been the son of Peter Shelton. This Ralph was born in Middlesex County, Virginia in 1685. In 1708 Ralph was a witness and a beneficiary to the will of one Thomas Meriwether. This was in Middlesex County, the will conveying to Ralph 65 acres in Essex County, the land bordering on the Essex-Middlesex County line. It remained in the Ralph Shelton family until 1763. Ralph Shelton, son, lived on an adjoining tract in Middlesex County until his death in 1733. He had 11 children, all but the first three of whom had their births recorded in Christ Church Parish. The children in order of birth were as follows: Thomas, Ralph, Elizabeth, Crispin, Reuben, Mary, Catherine, John, Benjamin, James and Daniel. His will was dated March 10, 1733."Subj: Ralph and Peter Shelton

I saw your Web site which is impressive and certainly represents a great deal of work.
I noticed you are listing the Gencom of Pam Anderson-Shelton. I have exchanged e-mails with her and I find listings on your site with which I do not believe her information agrees.
I am copying below my own research which contains sources on these points in question. Thank you.
HildredRalph Shelton m. Mary (surname unknown)
He died Middlesex Co., Va. 1733.
His will is recorded in Middlesex Co. Will Book B, 1712-1734, p. 418-419. March 10, 1733.
His death is recorded in Christ Church Parish Register, Middlesex Co., Va. No marriage record has been found. Date of marriage is unknown. The births of their children are recorded in Christ Church Parish Register, Middlesex Co., Va. The first child is recorded born in 1707. Therefore, they were likely married l705-1706.
The surname of Mary has not been discovered. Researchers have advanced the theory that it was Crispin based upon the fact that one of her sons was named "Crispin" and the further fact that a family of that surname lived in the area. Other researchers have proposed Payne based on browsing The Christ Church Parish Register for the birth of girls named "Mary" who would have been of an appropriate age to be the wife of Ralph Shelton. Unless a marriage bond is discovered, a family Bible turns up or a parish register is discovered, her surname will remain a mystery.
Recorded in Essex County Deeds & Wills, Book No. 10, 1699-1702, p.133, is a record of Thomas Merriwether claiming land for having imported Ralph to the Colony of Virginia -- a "headright" claim. There is no record of an indenture having been served by Ralph.
There has been discussion of the spelling of Ralph's surname in the Essex County Deeds and Wills Book in this headright claim by Merriwether. Some say it reads "Sheldon"; some say "Shelton". It is "Shelton" in my opinion. Clerks sometimes did shorthand "formation "eliding" of a letter in the way his name is written here. Obtain a photocopy and look at several "t"s in that entry. As many are not crossed as are crossed. Some are crossed only by beginning the next letter on the straight downstroke of the "t". Look at the "d"s, particularly in the word "according". It looks to me as though the Clerk started a "d", then lifted his pen before it was completed and began the cross-stroke of a "t" beginning exactly on the straight downstroke of the "t".Photocopy may be obtained from: Ms. Gayle Asworth Clerk of the Circuit Court Essex County P. O. Box 445 Tappahannock, VA 22560-0445 Telephone: 804-443-3541At his death, Thomas Merriwether left the land he received for the importation to Ralph Shelton. Merriwether's will states his relationship to every other heir in his will except Ralph. Ralph was a witness to Merriwether's will, signing his own name as "Ralph Shelteon". In the body of the will the name is spelled "Ralph Shelton". Merriwether's will is recorded in Essex Co, VA., Deeds and Wills Book No. 13, 1707-1711, on Jan. 7, 1708/09.
In 1733, at his death, Ralph left this land to his oldest son, Thomas, who died ten years later, in 1742. His death is recorded in Christ Church Parish Register.
Thomas left the land he inherited from his father, Ralph, to his eldest son, Reuben. Reuben later sold the land.
The will and patent descriptions place this land on the Essex-Middlesex boundary line. This location is further indicated by a description of Middlesex County written April 14, 1700, (“Va. Magazine of History“, Vol. 12, p.285) which reads in part, . ." said County is bounded on the head with the lower part of the land of John Jones dec' d which runs up from Rappahannock River on the upper part of Cock' s Bay next above ye land of James Blaise and so crossing the Ridge along the land of Thomas Tosley including the same from the outline of Thomas Toseley' s land down a great Branch dividing the land of Edward Thomas dec' d and the land of Rice Jones dec' d, including the said Rice Jones dec' s Land to the dragon swamp.(1)
This land remained in the possession of the Ralph Shelton family for sixty years. It appears that he lived on an adjoining tract in Middlesex the rest of his life. An Oct. 10, 1727 entry in the Christ Church Vestry Book reads, "Ordered that Mr. Garrot Daniel and Mr. Ralph Shelton procession every particular person' s Land between the Briery Swamp (From the Millstone Valley to the Dragon Swamp) and the upper End of the County, & from the main road to the Dragon Swamp on the SouthSide of the main road." (1)
Thirty-two years later, the Vestry Book of Aug. 7, 1759 notes, . Lewis Montague & Reuben Skilton ordered to procession . (area described identically as that processioned in 1727 by Ralph). On April 24, 1770, Archibald McCall of Essex County and Reuben Shelton of Middlesex County deeded (Essex Co. Deed Book 30, p. 359) to Henry Street of Essex all of a tract in the Counties of Middlesex and Essex containing 100 acres adjoining Lattaney Montague, the Dragon Swamp and land of Henry Street. (1)
To the best of my knowledge no one has ever discovered any connection in England for Ralph.
Speculation claims he is a son of the Shelton family in Norfolk, England. English records of the family assert that the Sir Ralph Shelton who has been claimed to be the father of a son who came to Virginia actually died without heirs. Frequently this son is said to have had a son Peter Shelton who married a Susanna Jackson (Jaxon) and that they are the parents of Ralph Shelton of Middlesex.
In Middlesex County, a Peter Chilton married Susan Jaxon on March 2, 1685. This is the first notice of a man who appears in the records as Chilton, Chelton and Shelton over the next 30 years. Three of his sons' births are recorded in the Christ Church Parish Register as Chilton, but his own name occurs in his 1718 will as Chilton, Chelton and Chellton. He signed his name by mark, Peter Chellton. There is no particle of evidence in either the Parish Register or the county records to support the claim of Mrs. Whitaker in her book, The Sheltons of England and America that Ralph Shelton of Middlesex was a son of this Peter and that this Peter was a descendent of the (non-existent according to English records) son of Sir Ralph Shelton whom she asserts came to Virginia. Peter's will speaks of sons Peter (deceased), William, Thomas and Zebulon, and of no others. A fifth son, Henry Chelton, so noted in the Register, had predeceased his father, aged about 26 and probably unmarried. (2)
The British records used to prove Sir Ralph Shelton of Norfolk Co., England, died without heirs follow. These books are expensive (at least they were back when I was dealing with them) and are normally found only in large libraries. I rather doubt that you would be able to get these on Interlibrary Loan but it does not hurt anything to try your local library:
The Visitation of Norfolk, anno Domini 1664 made by Sir Edward Bysshe
The Visitation of Norfolk Made/Taken by William Hervey, Clarencieux King of Arms, anno 1563, enlarged with other descents and also Visitation by John Rave, anno 1613.
Norfok Parish Registers: Marriages (in 12 vol.) (The years covered are approximately from the early 1500s to about 1840s)
Wills Proved in the Norfolk Archdeaconry Court from 1453 thru 1603/4.
(The above volumes are sometimes covered with the shorthand term "Visitations of Norfolk")
Blomefield, Francis -An essay towards a topographical History of the County of Norfolk...published 1739-1775 in 5 volumes. (It actually has many pedigrees of local gentry and is usually referred to as "Blomefield").
Other speculations assert that Ralph was the brother of Susannah, the wife of Thomas Merriwether. There is no proof of the surname of Thomas's wife, nor whether she was Colonial or came from England, as has also been speculated.
Genealogy accounts frequently confuse Ralph Shelton of Middlesex and the other Ralph Shelton who died 1743 in King William Co. The other Ralph was the son of Richard Gissage and Sarah Shelton who retained the surname of his mother. After the death of Gissage, Sarah married Joseph Bickley who gave a bond for the education of the "infant" Ralph Shelton at the time of the marriage, recorded in King William co. This Ralph Shelton married in 1721 Mary Pollard, daughter of Robert Pollard of King William County. This Ralph lived in Saint Mary's Parish. (sources: "The Amherst Enterprise, 8-7-1879)
An excellent article entitled "The Two Ralph Sheltons" by Jeanne Brooks Gart, CG, is in Tidewater Virginia Families, Vol. 3, No. 4, February/March 1995. A photocopy can be obtained by taking this citation to the Interlibrary Loan desk of your local library and asking them to obtain a copy for you. There may be a fee involved. (The Library of Virginia in Richmond, VA, holds copies of this journal. There will be a fee there.)
Hildred Footnotes: (1) and (2) these paragraphs are copied from the work of Keynon Stevenson who died in 1957. He was very thorough in his research and I have not caught him in an error which he himself did not later correct. He never published the work from which this is quoted but I have a manuscript copy that he shared.

SHELTON FAMLIES OF McMINN CO. TN - James Shelton pg 9 "Further with regard to the tradition in the family that the head of the tribe in Virginia had 12 brothers would seem to be corroborated in a listing by Mrs. Catherine Shelton Moser, said to be descended from Peter Shelton, which she made in 1940. He was born in Middlesex County, Virginia in 1726 James and Jincie had 13 sons: Thomas, James, Joseph, John, Mark, Anderson, Frederick, Jarrett or Garrett, Porter, George, William and David... the 13th not remembered, something like Rawleigh.
