James' two sons were reared by their maternal grandparents.
a. Silas Sylvester Mask, born 1852, Pontotoc Co., MS, died there 1914, married (1) in Mar of 1870 to Nettie Gilliam, born about 1853. She is reported to have run away with another man. Sylvester married there about 1877 to Lucie America Austin. His children were born in Pontotoc Co., MS.Silas Sylvester Mask and his younger brother James Emmerline Mask were very close until about 1885-1887 when the Mormon Missionaries came through Pontotoc County and James Emmerline joined their cause. At that point James and Sylvester quarreled over religion, and James packed up his family and worked his way westward as a teamster. Sylvester remained in Pontotoc Co., and still has descendants there.
